    Flint Journal 12 Sep 1932
Mrs. Alice F Phelps, 82 years old, resident of Flint and vicinity all her life, died yesterday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Edith Pangborn of Swartz Creek, after an illness of four months. Born May 23, 1850 at Otisville, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeremia Thompson, she married Jerome Phelps Sept. 26, 1886 (typo, should be 1868) at Atlas. She was a member of the Atlas Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Pangborn of Swartz Creek and Mrs. Maud Riegle of Flint; a sister Mrs. Gertrude Russell of New York state; five grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

1910 Census says 3 children/2 living. It would appear should be 4 children/3 living. Unless Reuben A had died by that time, then would be 4/2? Alice obit shows 2 children surviving. We have arthur obit 1904. What about Reuben A???--Answer to this is that Reuben A is actually son of Leander whose wife died!! so 3/2 is corect.

(HEADLINE:) She lived alone near her son. When found her body was found lying on the bed with the clothing burned off.

Mrs. Mary Phelps met with a terrible death last evening, shortly before 6 o'clock, being burned to death at her home on the farm of her son, Jerome, on Atherton Street in Burton.
Mrs. Phelps lived alone in a little house about 4 rods east of the residence of the son named, and (her) grandson Arthur, living several rods east of her. Last evening, between 5 and 6 o'clock her son went to the house where his mother lived to fix the fire and found her seated before the stove. He did what was necessary to the stove and cautioned the old lady, who was about eighty-six, not to meddle with the fire. Shortly before 6 o’clock Arthur left his house to go to the barn to harness a horse to take two ladies who were visiting him to the electric railway station at Morrish’s crossing, and while passing the house smelled smoke. He groped his way to the chair in which his grandmother usually sat, and finding her not there ran to the bed, on which he found her lying. He was unable to carry her out and called for his father. Together they carried the bed out of the house and found Mrs. Phelps was dead. Her clothing had been burned off her body and the bed clothing had been burned. It is supposed that her clothing caught fire and she rushed to the bed and threw herself upon it in the hope that the fire would be extinguished by so doing, or that a spark set fire to her dress and she went to bed, and while lying down the spark burst into a blaze and she was burned to death. The two young ladies who were visiting the younger Phelps passed the house a few minutes before Arthur did and smelled nothing.
Mrs. Phelps was born in New York and came to Davison with her husband, R.G. Phelps about 50 years ago. They lived in Davison for about twenty years and then moved to Burton where Mr. Phelps died about twenty-five years ago. She is survived by six children. They are Jerome, of Burton; Leander, of Saginaw; Eugene, who lives in California; Mrs. Delos Cole, of St. Johns; Mrs. Adaline Thompson, who lives near Millington, and Alice of Gratiot county.
Dr. Charles was notified and went to Burton last night, but did not deem an inquest necessary.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. from the home of her son, Jerome. Interment will be made in the Kitchen cemetery in Davison.

(death certificate lists cause of death-smothered by smoke) (death certificate list John Crosette as her father, mother unknown). Notes:

    NORMAN PHELPS JR

Norman Phelps Jr was born in the vicinity of Bradford, Vermont on 9 Nov 1787. We arrived at this conclusion after analyzing much confusing and conflicting information. The phelpsinc.com website shows Fort Ann, New York in Nov 1788. Norman Phelps himself had listed 4 different States of birth on 4 different census records; New York (1850), Massachusetts (1855), Vermont (1860) and Connecticut (1870)!! This confusion is apparently from his father Norman Phelps, Sr having moved around considerably during the few years before and after Norman's birth. This movement is logged in Norman Sr's military pension file. Approximate dates are given for each move in terms of number of years after the war. It is very approximate. Apparently Norman was aware of the movement, but was himself confused as to which State his father was actually living when Norman Jr was born. The only documentation we have is a log entry by Mrs. Lydia Phelps Baldwin of Bradford, Vermont who logged every birth she attended over a 52 year span, over 500 names (New England Historical & Genealogical Register 1950 Vol 104 P263). She recorded the birth of a son to Norman Phelps on 9 Nov 1787. Unfortunately she did not record the spouses name or the sons name, so we can not be certain that this is the same person. However Norman Sr did not have any sons other than Norman in this time period. Mrs Baldwin was a first cousin to Norman Sr and a review of her log entries shows that she also assisted in delivery of Dewey and Horsford children who were related to Norman Sr's mother, Desire Dewey. Norman Jr's grave stone shows died 19 May 1871 age 83 & 6 mos, which is Nov 1787. Considering that his father's pension record shows that he was in Vermont in that approximate time period and that the midwife keeping the log was his fathers close relative, then this birth date and place becomes quite plausible.

According to the 1790 Federal Census Norman was living in Kingsbury. According to his fathers pension file, they lived in Kingsbury for a total of 3 years then moved to Fort Ann where Norman Jr lived until sometime prior to 1870 when he moved to Queensbury, New York.

The records for the War of 1812 show Norman Phelps Jr as a private in the 23rd Regiment (Cook's) of the New York Militia.

He died 19 May 1871 in (Queensbury) Warren County, New York. He is buried in Seelye Cemetery in Warren County, New York.

ALFORD/GREENE - In The Greene Family of St. Albans, Vermont, together with the origin and history of The Greene Family in England and Rhode Island, by Walter and Ella Greene (1964), p. 40, the author has a question on the parentage of Susan ALFORD, who married Nathan GREENE: Susan ALFORD is the sister of Rebecca ALFORD who married Alfred HATHAWAY, according to Susan’s affidavit in the Revolutionary War pension application files. On March 17, 1840, Susan GREENE states that she is age 66, living in St. Albans, and a sister of Rebecca Hathaway, whose maiden name was Rebecca Alford. The letter is in the file of Rebecca Hathaway, widow of Alfred Hathaway, applying for pension benefits. Another file, that of George ALFORD, has a letter from Rebecca stating that she is his sister. Additionally, brothers Oliver and Benedict have letters in the George ALFORD file. They are all children of Benedict ALFORD, and Rebecca OWEN is the mother of all but Benedict. Other siblings (but not Susan) are listed in R. D. Owen, Descendents of John Owen of Windsor, Connecticut (1622-1699) (1941), p. 75. Regarding the name “Benedict,” I also had difficulty finding Rebecca Hathaway's father because in Hathtaways of America (1970 edition), p. 185, Rebecca is stated as being the dau. of Olaf ALFORD. Evidently he did not like the name Benedict.
For anyone else related La Alfred & Rebecca (ALFORD) HATHAWAY, I have further corrections to the volume above: Alfred & Rebecca moved to Porter, New York, ca. 1822, where Alfred died in 1829, not to St. Albans as the book states. Also, Rebecca made a pension affidavit in 1844 and was still living in 1850 inPorter, New York, age 88, per the 1850 census, where she is listed in the household of her sister, Pauline (HATHAWAY) Fisher.
