WILLIAM HENRY HULSE, merchant; Sparta. Jabez Hulse was born in Tompkins Co., N. Y., Dec, 25, 1807, and is the son of Thomas and Leah (Weatherby) Hulse. Jabez's family consisted of his wife, Maria (Slack) Hulse, daughter of Theophilus and Mercy Slack, and seven children as follows Francis G. Albert S., William H., Jesse, Cornelia, James K. P. and Maria, all of whom are married, except Jesse, who lives with his father. Jabez was married Jan. 1, 1832, and came to Ohio in the fall of 1835, locating in South Bloomfield Tp., Morrow Co. His wife died March 10, 1870. Feb. 28, 1872, he was again married, his second wife being Maria Henry, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Henry, with whom he is yet living. His son William Henry, or "Hank," as he is more familiarly known, was born in Morrow Co., Ohio, Nov. 7, 1837; be lived with his parents until he was 15 years old, and was then apprenticed to learn the carpenters' trade. During his youth he obtained a thorough knowledge of the chair making business, which trade was followed, more or less, after he became a man; he learned the carriage makers' trade and worked at that in connection with his other trades. When about 33 years old, he began clerking for S. L. Newcomb, in Sparta, who was in the general -mercantile business; was also at Pulaskiville in the same business for a few months. On the 13th of October, 1875, he formed a partnership with Wesley Chipps, at Sparta, to be known as Chipps & Hulse, dealers in general merchandise. The partners advanced equal amounts of capital, and bought the stock of W. C. Harris, which invoiced at $31.25. These young men have been in the business ever since, and have the liveliest business in their lively town. Mr. Hulse was married June 13, 1869, to Miss Ellen Bliss, daughter of Caroline and Mason Bliss. The wife is one of a family of six children, and was born Dee, 4, 1846. Henry Hulse is Deputy Postmaster at Sparta. He is a Universalist in his religious belief, and is one of the most enterprising and successful business men of Sparta.

Page 108- 1795 - Anthony Huls - D04/024/012 - Cayuqa/Seneca/Thompkins Go's. Anthony Huls, the son of Thomas Huls (D03/012/004); and Deborah Johnston, was born about 1751 in Freehold, New Jersey. In about 1795, he and his children, plus a number of other related families from New Jersey (Weatherby, Longstreet, Schenck, etc.), migrated into Cayuga and Thompkins Counties, New York, in response to a land speculation deal. In 1804 he moved his family to Ulysees (later re-named Enfield) in Seneca Co. (now Thompkins Co.) His children were Margaret, Thomas, Deborah, Martha, Polly, Williara, and possibly Hendrick. The family stayed in Enfield for about a generation and then many of his grandchildren, (along with the descendants of some of the above mentioned families) migrated into Ohio. Both Anthony and his wife probably died in Enfield.

From 1834 Probate children, in order listed, are:
    Catherine Rowland (Rowling)

Anthony married Catharine Allen. Catharine (daughter of Hezikiah Allen) was born in 1748; died before 1834. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Catharine Allen was born in 1748 (daughter of Hezikiah Allen); died before 1834.

    Other Events:

    • Reference Number: 2057

    Notes:

Hezikiah Allen's will in 1776 mentioned a child Catharine per book 'annals of the sinnott, roger, coffin, corlies, reeves, bodine and allied families'. citation monmouth county probate files.
Granvyl Hulse writes 'Catharine is reportedly the daughter of hezikiah Allen born 1716/20 in Shrewsbury,,,he was the son of Jonathon and Mary Corlies Allen both of Shrewsbury' but I have no citation on that.

Found a summarized transcription of aforementioned will on Hezikiah Allen of Shrewsbury Township dated 29 feb 1776. in 'The literary era: a monthly repository of literary and ..., Volume 3' no date of probate. liber 17, no page #, west jersey. perhaps there is another record when the will was proved?

So at this point we have no real evidence that our catharine is the daughter of hezikiah allen.

OneWorldTree shows catharine dau of hezekiah allen married unknown Hulse.

1776, Feb 29. Allen, Hezekiali, of Shrewsbury Township, Monmouth County; will of. Grandson, David Allen, £1. Daughters, Mary Allen and Martha Allen, all my wool now on the sheeps' backs. Rest of estate to be sold. Son, James. £10. Son, Jonathon, £10. Children-Mary Allen, James Allen, Jonathon Allen, Catharine Allen and Martha Allen, the rest. Executors-friends, Edward Patterson Cook and Benjamin Jackson. Witnesses-Christopher Romine, John Lawrence. Proved May 28, 1776. Lib 21, P. 91.

I am troubled by the fact that she was referred to as Catharine Allen, not Catharine Hulse in spite of being married for about 9 years at the time.

As this is all the real evidence we have, we would have to be leaning against this being the correct person.

    Other Events:

    • Reference Number: 6375

    Notes:

This Thomas Huls was earlier assumed to be the son of Benjamin Hulse as is reported in many on-line trees. According to the Hulse Net website DNA testing shows descendants of Thomas matching descendants of Richard Hulse, who immigrated from perhaps England before 1670. Benjamin Hulse is not in Richard's line. Descendants of Richard Holsaert (Benjamins ancestor) and of ancestors of Richard Hulse were living on Long Island during the same time period, however the families were apparently not related.

Unconfirmed that Hezekiah is the correct parent for this Catharine Allen. Perhaps the wrong person. See notes under Catharine Allen.

The Hezekiah allen who died 16 Aug 1775 is a different Hezekiah Allen
