Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Jan Foshay was born about 1672 (son of Jean (Jan) Le Faucheur and Judith Enrion).

    Other Events:

    • Reference Number: 9157

    Notes:

Jan was likely born in abt 1674 in France or England. His parents, Jean Le Fauchuer and Judith Enrion, are known to have been living in England and part of the ThreadNeedle Huguenot Church in London in 1682 at the birth of his brother, Pierre.[1][2]

Jan and Eva (his wife) Fouseer are 18th and 19th on the member list of the The Old Dutch Sleepy Hollow Reformed Church, Sleepy Hollow, Westchester County, New York.[3][4]

    Disputed Death information
Jan's death date is uncertain. A "Jan Forseur" is buried in Harringtown, Bergen County, New Jersey, United States, but no date is given. Some unverified family trees show a date of 1732, others show a date of 1783 (which seems unlikely). A Find-a-grave entry is connected to this Jan, but some of the information is incorrect or can not be verified (For example Jan's father is shown married to Jan's wife and the children are not correct).[5] Further, Jan's father (of the same name) is given the same death date and location by some researchers.

A "Jan Vosie" is a baptism witness for Jan's son Isaac's child in baptism in 1757. It is possible that Jan was still living at this time or this Jan may be a relative.[6]

    Marriage & Children
He married Eva Matthys in abt 1696 in New York.[citation needed] He was 22 and Eva was 21 when they wed.

    Children
Matthis Foshay or De Maijer (abt 1697-aft 1756) bp 10 Mar 1697 son of Jan de Mayer & Eva, m. Magdalentje Ecker[7]

    Alternate Surnames
David Cole, 1822-1903, who researched this family and several others for his 1876 book about the Cole Family, had this to say:

"The original name we think was 'Forsieur.' On the Reformed Church records it is most frequently written 'Forseur.' Other orthographies, which abound, as Fosjeur, Forsheur, Faseur, Fashaw, etc., are blunders of copyists. These are found in almost endless variety. Some of them so disguise the name that none but those familiar with the family connections could possibly detect it. The numerous descendants now write it Vorseur, Forseur, Forshee, Forshay, etc. One, a physician residing in Philadelphia, Pa., writes his name William W. Fouche. But the original, we think, was 'Forsieur.' In pronunciation, it followed the analogy of the familiar French term of address-'Monsieur.' The proverbial difticulty of this combination of letters to one not born to the French is sufficient to account for all the corruptions in spelling and pronunciation which, among a Holland people, grew in back centuries upon the word 'Forsieur.'
    [16]
Theodore Melvin Banta 1834-1910, author of The Banta Genealogy notes:

:"Magdalena Banta married Jonathan Forseur, who was born January 15, 1733. She died 1776-7, and was buried in the old churchyard at Kakiat, Rockland County, N.Y. The names of their descendants are variously spent Forshay, Foshay, etc."

  2. 3.  Judith Enrion was born about 1652 in France; died in 1694 in New York City, New York.

    Other Events:

    • Reference Number: 18220

    Notes:

    Birth
Judith (Unknown) was born about 1652 (based on 1st known child born abt 1674), most-likely in Brittany, France.[1]

    Surname
Judith's name was listed as "Judic Enrion" in the baptismal record for her son Pierre, christened 30 April, 1682 at the Threadneedle Huguenot Church in London.[2]

    Marriage & Children
She married Jan/Jean Le Faucheur abt 1673 (based on birth of 1st known child) in France. The surname Le Faucheur [means "the Reaper" or "the Mower" as in harvesting wheat] still exists in France and is primarily found in Brittany (Cotes du Nord departement). The couple had 2 known sons,

    Jean (Le Faucheur) Fauce (abt.1674-bef.1732)
    Pierre Le Faucheur (1683-abt. 1751)[3][4]

    Burial
There is a record of the French Church du Saint Esprit, New York City, that the funeral expenses, £1.1.9, for Judith Le Faucheur were paid 12 Nov 1694.[5] This means that Judith and her children were French Reformed Protestants, otherwise known as "Huguenots," who had to flee France after Roman Catholic King Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes that guaranteed Protestants religious tolerance. [1] Judith Le Faucheur can be assumed to be for the mother of Jan (AKA Jean) and Pieter (AKA Pierre) Le Faucheur. Others say Judith Le Faucheur arrived in New York City with her 2 sons (no husband mentioned) from France around 1695; if this is true, then they most-likely arrived in 1694 and she died soon after their arrival.
