Here lies the body of Dn Josiah Dewey. He was born in Windsor 1640.........Slept in Jesus Sept7, 1732 In ye 92 year of his Age. Connecticut cemetery inscription. NEHGS 1920 Vol74 P57

transcriptions of Westfield Vital Records show wife of this Josiah as Experience Dewey--but that appears to be a mistake, as children born later are listed to Hepzibah. Also, Ebenezer listed as son of Josiah and Experience in Westfield Vital Records shows as son of Josiah and Hepzibah on his gravestone. Also Hepzibahs gravestone in Lebanon's Old Cemtery is inscribed as husband of Josiah.

It is Agreed and Concluded betwixt this Courte in the behalfe of the Children of Thomas Dewey and Geo: Phelps of Wyndsor that the whole of the land both meadow and vpland mentioned in the said Deweys Invento: amounting to the Sum of 75£ Shall bee sequestred for the Childre[ns] seuerall porcons so farr as it goes, and the remainder be[ing] 52£, he Ingages himselfe to gi7e int to the Courte sufficie[nt] security for the payment thereof according to the will of the Courte. The howse and peece of land belonging to it valued at 40£, the said Phelps Accepts vppon his wiues parte of the Estate.

Notes:

The first record of Thomas Dewey in the new world is 1633 in Dorchester. Speculation is that since he first appears in a record in 1633, he may have arrived in July 1633 on an unnamed ship which sailed from Weymouth, Dorsetshire, England. But again that is speculation.

It has been claimed that he was from Sandwich, Kent, but there is no evidence. And most of the early settlers of Dorchester were from the West Country of England, not Kent.

He married Frances Unknown, widow of Unknown Clark, in Windsor on 22 Mar 1638/39. It has been stated that her first husband was Joseph Clark of Windsor, but Clarence Torrey proved in 1928 that this was not the case.

Thomas died 27 April 1648 in Windsor.

His widow Frances remarried Nov 1648 the widower George Phelps, another of our ancestors.

Thomas Dewey appears in the "Great Migration Begins: Series" and the above information is from that source.

Among the descendants of Thomas Dewey are Mamie Eisenhower, Admiral Thomas Dewey and three of the "Beach Boys" Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson.

Notes:

Many online genealogies show Frances Randall Clark as the daughter of Philip Randall. She allegedly married 1) Joseph Clark 2) Thomas Dewey and 3) George Phelps. We have been unable to confirm this through the Dewey Family History, as Thomas Dewey's wifes maiden name is not mentioned.

Philip Randall in his will mentions the children of his dau Phillury and George Phelps, but he does not mention the children of Frances and Thomas Dewey. That would imply that the Frances who married Thomas Dewey was not his daughter.

Also, Clarence Torrey in the NYGBR 59:214-215 shows that the wife of Joseph Clark died before he did. And that the widow Frances Clark who married Thomas Dewey was not previously married to Joseph Clark, her first husband being unknown. Her maiden name is unknown, I can find no valid citation for the use of Randall as a maiden name.
