    Notes:

Appears in 1840 census living next to Varnis Maxfield in Groveland Twp. Varnis & Hiram appear in legal notice in 1837 New York Newspaper, as "residents of Michigan". There ages, both born in New Hampshire, both moving from New York to Michigan at about the same time, living next to each other in Michigan, both marrying females last name of Irish, lends credence to their being closely related, probably brothers.

Hiram has child born in New York in 1833 and is in Michigan by 1837.

Also on the 1840 census D (David) Irish and L (Liberty) Irish appear as the two households just prior to the Hiram and Varnis households.

Hiram married Sarah Irish before 1830. Sarah (daughter of David Irish and Sally Phelps) was born on 5 May 1809; died on 8 May 1863. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Sarah Irish was born on 5 May 1809 (daughter of David Irish and Sally Phelps); died on 8 May 1863.

    Other Events:

    • Reference Number: 3982

    Notes:

The name Sarah Irish appears on death certificate of two of her children, Hiram and Edna and also appears on Marriage Record of Edna. Hiram's brother also married an Irish female.

In 1855 Oakland County land records show that Sarah Maxfield transferred land to Liberty Irish (son of David). The document is in the name of Sarah Maxfield, but also has Hiram Maxfields signature and the signature of Polly Malinda Irish (apparently daughter of David) Book 55 page 338-9. This is the entry right after book 55 page 337-8 dated 10 June 1855 whereby Varnis Maxfield quit claimed to Manly Irish (son of David). Book 55 page 339-40 involves Liberty and Damon Irish transferring to Manly Irish. As David died 8 Jan 1855 these transfers may have had something to do with the settling of David's estate. Which could imply that Sarah Maxfield is an heir to David Irish.

The 1820 cenus shows David Irish with one female in the household under the age of 10. The 1820 census shows 1 female in the household between the age of 10 and 15. We do not know of any female children in that age range other than Sarah.

On the 1840 Federal Census the household next to David Irish is Hiram Maxfield and Sarah Irish, which suggests a relation between David and Sarah.

    Notes:

From: W. L. Irish - David Irish and family settled in Groveland Twp. Oakland County, Michigan in 1837. He purchased 80 acres for each of his 8 sons and 40 acres for each of his 2 daughters. One of his sons, Norman, brought a wife and three children with him to Michigan, and was killed a number of years later by a kick of a horse. Two of his sons, Damon and George, were living in the same neighborhood in 1877. Damon Irish of Groveland Twp., paid a bounty of $14 for a volunteer to serve in the Civil War in 1864. (Note: The book is in error on the relationship of George and Damon. George and Damon were his grand children, sons of Norman.)
Oakland County real estate records show an entry for David Irish of Washington County, New York purchasing land dated 13 June 1836.
David died intestate (with no will) in Brandon, Oakland, Michigan on 8 Jan 1855. His probate paperwork stated there were 8 heirs, although only Manley and Liberty were specifically mentioned. The probate petition ended up being dismissed when the heirs agreed among themselves on a settlement.

    Notes:

    from a gencircles web site:
There was an article in the The Washington Post of March 10, 1808; "The wife of David IRISH of Westfield (Now Fort Ann, Washington Co. NY.)was delivered of five children, two sons and three daughters. They were alive when born, but died in a few hours. They altogether weighed seven pounds and fiveounces." Note of this event was also made in the 1810 Census of Queensbury, Warren Co. NY.

"David Irish, with a wife and three children, was the last family listed in the 1810 census of Queenbury, Washington County, New York. At the bottom of the page, the census-taker wrote a footnote concerning David's wife as follows: 'This woman is 24 years old and has had 10 children, 5 of which were born at one and the same time.' This may be the first instance of quintuplets recorded in this country."
Printed in National Genealogical Society Quarterly, June 1965, Vol. 53.

The number of children caught our eye, so we looked at the family. The note is really there, and does appear to be marked for David.

The Irish families living in Queensbury in 1810 are:
    Amos Irish
    Andrew Irish
    Benjamin Irish
    David Irish
    Jonathan Irish

There is an extremely well presented website for the Irish family at:
    http://lthome.com/genealogy/

We copied the following information from there:
    Benjamin Irish
    Birth , 16 Mar 1749/50 , S. Kingston, Washington, RI
Father , Joseph Irish, b. 20 Apr 1724, S. Kingston, Washington Co., RI
    Mother , Dorcas (Irish)
    Group Sheet , F0918

    1. Andrew Irish, b. BET 1765 AND 1784
    2. David Irish, b. 23 Jan 1783
    3. Amos Irish, b. 1786, Amenia, Dutchess, NY
    4. Jonathan Irish, b. 27 Jul 1789, Warren or Washington Co., NY

    This looks like the family.

It should be noted that though the census says that Mrs Irish had 10 kids, only 3 are living with them.

David's wife was Sally PHELPS daughter of Norman PHELPS Sr. of Fort Ann, Washington Co. NY. born July 31, 1785 in Hebron, Tolland Co. CT. They moved to Michigan in 1837 and David & Sally were divorced on November 15, 1847.
