    Notes:

BIRTH: 03 Aug 1898 in Bay City, MI per Terry---Mabel according to everyone in the family was born July 1, 1900. But the 1900 census says she was one year old in May of 1900. Mom swears her birthday is July 1st 1900. However, Bay City birth records show the true birth date. The 1900 Census says born July 1899. It is odd that when the month and year is given on such a young person, it could be a year off. Although I have seen that before and upon thinking about it I can understand how it could happen. Assume Mabel was born in July 1898 (the date of record over a year later could have been a few days off). Census taker asks on June 19, 1900 how old is Mabel? correct answer is 1, because she has not reached her second birthday, yet. The census taker asks what month was she born? Correct answer is July. I can then see the census taker writing down July 1899 because that was about 1 year ago. I don't know if that makes sense, but I have seen other children listed one year off, when it just didn't make sense that the parent would be a year off on the birthdate, especially such a young child.

PARENTS: George Seeley and Harriet Emily Schultz

MARRIAGE: 11 Aug 1917 in Prescott, Ogemaw, MI

DEATH: 15 May 1943 Bay City, MI

Schultz (difficult to make out if O or C for initial in name), Mr. and Mrs. Paul Scholtz, Mr. N. Schultz, Mr. & Mrs. R. Schultz, Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Talor or Tabor, Mr. Fred Storrs & family, references on flowers from Uncle Walt and Uncle Rube. I suspect that a sister (named Emma) to George Seeley Jr. (the George married to Harriet) was married to Fred Storrs.

William H Osborne was born in New York State in either Monroe County or Kings County (depending on which New York State Census entry you believe) in 1855 -1857. • Residence: 1900, Fraser, Bay, Michigan, USA
    • Residence: 1910, Bay City, Bay, Michigan, USA; Ward 6

    Notes:

Mary Ann Elizabeth Hider was born 1855 in Withyham, Sussex, England as the daughter of a single mother, Charlotte Hider. After her mother married in 1859 Mary Ann Elizabeth took the surname of her step-father, George Willard (He was born and married as surname Willey, but later used the surname Williard).

On 10 Feb 1857, Peter Hider, son Peter, dau. Elizabeth, dau. Charlotte, granddau. Mary Ann Elizabeth (also: John William Barnett) all departed from London, on the ship Christiana. The ship landed at NYC on 8 Apr 1857. On 10 Apr 1857 the family arrived at Woodstock, Ontario, Canada.

I note that numerous online trees show Mary Ann Elizabeth's father as James Hider. This appears to be a mistake. James Hider and Barbara Tester had a child Mary Ann in the same year, 1855. But this child is a different person and apparently is the source of the confusion.

    Notes:

Betty Osborne/A.R. common ancestor Jesse Shultz/Hannah Mayberryper Terry-Harriet Seeley died according to my notes on July 11th, 1932. I did see her death certificate at the Bay County Records.
4/16/08-Terry had a conversation with Dorothy Seeley (daughter of Harry Seeley)-The only thing she remembers about her Gramma Seeley (Harriet Schultz Seeley) is that she laid in bed upstairs at uncle Clarence's house ill. She used to moan and yell out. Her funeral home record says she died of paralysis so probably had stroke at some time??
4/16/08-Terry had conversation with Phyllis Watson and Dorothy Seeley--Harriet and George II Seeley are buried in Pine Ridge Cemetery. There is a grave marker according to both Phyllis and Dorothy. It is just a flat brick like marker with their names on it. They both think they could find it if we were to go to the cemetery. So that is a project we want to do. Dorothy said seems like it is by a big tree. I had looked in the past for their graves but assumed there was no marker since I could not find it. (update: got location of grave plot from historical society. It is under a big tree, but there are no gravestones there. Stone apparently was removed.)

    Notes:

According to family tradition William E was an inventor who had a patent for an improvement to the breech-loading cannon. Unable to sell or otherwise make money off his patent in the United States he traveled to Prussia and sold his idea for an unknown sum of money to Krupp Manufacturing, the well-known arms manufacturer in Germany. It is said that due to the cold weather, Mr. Krupp gave William E a heavy winter coat with gold buttons. After he returned to the United States, his brother Thomas stole his gold buttons! (names may have been changed in the retelling, we do not show a bother named Thomas).

    BIRTH:
Based on the Federal and State Census records William E Osborne was born 1801 to 1803 in Connecticut. (The handwriting on the 1865 New York State Census which could be Canada is obviously an error). His father Israel Osborne was living in East Windsor, Connecticut from 1796 or earlier to at least 1811 based on East Windsor Real Estate records). An 1855 passport record states that is was 50 years old and born in East Windsor, Connecticut (which would imply born 1805).

    MARRIAGE:
First wife- Unknown. We only know there is a first wife by the 1865 New York State Census where he states he was married 2 times.
Second wife- Ann Eliza Unknown. Marriage date by 1855 for birth of William and certainly by 1859 (based on William E and Ann E signing off on a real estate deed in connection with his fathers estate). Her maiden name may be McPherson. Her son in law listed Eliza McPherson as his first wife (who passed away) on a naval pension document. His first wife was Lida Osborne. Perhaps Eliza was Lida’s correct name. Perhaps Mcpherson was her mother’s name at the time Lida was born. Which could indicate that Ann Eliza already had Lida before she married William E. (according to the New York State Census Ann Eliza was on her first marriage and William his second.) Also, on the 1865 New York State Census, a sister Emeline Mcfeeson (McPherson??) is living in the Osborne household. Emeline being 39 years younger than William and 14 years younger than Ann Eliza was probably the sister of Ann Eliza, not William.

    DEATH: after 1878.
1878 is the last entry we find for William Osborne in the Rochester City Directory. We can find no record of William E Osborne after this date.

1880 Federal Census. We are unable to locate William E Osborne on this census.

    CHILDREN:
Any children with his unknown first wife are unknown.
Lida b. 1843 may have been the child of Ann Eliza before they married.
William b. 1855 was probably the child of William E (in particular the middle name of Hayden would seem to indicate he was named by Israel Osborn (after Israel’s mother Anna Hayden) and his second wife.
The 1865 census listed that Ann Eliza who was on her first marriage had 4 children. Considering the 25 year age difference between William E and Ann E, the 4 children may have been William’s children or a combination of William’s and Ann’s children.
It is therefore a possibility that William had two or three children that we do not know about.
The theory that William H and Lida are step-siblings helps us make sense of the marriage of William H’s daughter (Lillian) to Lida’s son (Edgar). A fufirst cousin marriage does not seem correct of people not living in a rural and/or isolated area. Also, the 25 year age difference makes it less likely that a 40 year old William married a 15 year old, which would be necessary for Lida to be his daughter.

    OTHER NOTES:
It should also be noted that William E's grandparents John Hayden and Anna Trumbull were first cousins. Also, his great grandparents Ammi Trumbull and Sabra Gaylor were 2nd cousins.

    Notes:

Little is known about Ann Eliza Osborne. We have identified her on three census records 1865, 1870, 1875 and one newspaper obituary for her daughter. As she is 25 years younger than her husband, we are suspicious that there may have been an earlier first husband. Which then throws the parentage of the children into question.

Her name appears as Anna, Ann E or Ann Eliza in the different records which we do have.

We have found one document referring to her daughter Lida Osborne as Eliza McPherson. Which raises the possibility that Lida's name earlier in life was McPherson. Perhaps Lida was married earlier or had a different father than William E. We have been unable to identify any census entries under that name. We have also found an 1865 census entry listing a sister (William's or Ann's?) as Emeline McFeeson, lending credence to the possibility Ann's maiden name is McPherson. The 1865 census lists she had 4 children and that this was her first marriage. Beyond Lida and William we do not know who the earlier children could be.

Much work needs to be done on this lady.

    Notes:

On 10 Feb 1857, Peter Hider, son Peter, dau. Elizabeth, dau. Charlotte, granddau. Mary Ann Elizabeth (also: John William Barnett) all departed from London, on the ship Christiana. The ship landed at NYC on 8 Apr 1857. On 10 Apr 1857 the family arrived at Woodstock, Ontario, Canada.
In 1859 in Durham, Ontario, Charlotte married George Willey (son of Edward Willey and Jemima Batey-who lived in Hartfield, Sussex located right next to Withyham).
By 1864-65 Charlotte, George and family had moved to Rochester, New York. By this time for reasons unknown the family was using the surname Willard (instead of Willey). Charlotte's daughter, Mary Ann Elizabeth Hider was also using the name Willard, although she was 4 years old when her mother married George Willey.
It is unknown if Mary Ann Elizabeth knew that the family name was originally Willey or that George was not her biological father.
By 1866 George had died in Rochester.
About 1877 Mary Ann Elizabeth married William H Osborne in Rochester.
By 1880 the entire family had moved to Bay City, Michigan.
In about 1883 Charlotte remarried to James Flood.(per census record of 1900 and death certificate). Place of marriage is unknown. James Flood is in the Bay City City Directory from 1891 on and is living at 2318 or 2313 Fitzhugh. Also living at the same residence is Charlotte's granddaughter, Lillian Osborne and husband Edgar Melvin (per 1897 city directory entry of Edgar Melvin boarding at 2313 Fitzhugh)
Charlotte Flood died in Bay City on Jan 15, 1902. Per death certificate Charlotte Flood was born in England 22 Jul 1833. Her father is listed as Geo Hydar. Geo as a first name is an apparent error. Her first husband was George. Reported by her second husband, James Flood.

    Notes:

George was born about 1826. He passed away in 1905.

NAME: George Zulch-Spelled with an umlaut over the u is apparently the proper ancestral spelling of this German name.

BIRTH: Most likely 14 Oct 1826. Census records have his birth year 1826 to 1828. His death certificate and gravestone have month and day as Oct 14, but the year as 1832. Which is an obvious error. Born 14 Oct 1826 to a single mother, Anna Catharina Schuch. At age 3 1/2 his mother married Lorenz Zulch. The Evangelische Kirche Von Kurhessen_Waldeck archives note that when George Schuch was confirmed in 1841 his mother was then married to Lorenz Zulch. The archives furthur note that George along with his Uncle Ludwig Carl Schuch and Ludwig's family emigrated to America. An undated note on his church record, states that the priest knows that Lorenz Zulch was the father. The birth record and confirmation record in Germany use the Schuch surname. Apparently, in coming to this country he decided to use his fathers name.

BIRTHPLACE: The state of Hesse-Kassel, Germany based on census records. Information had come forward previously that he was born in Raboldshausen, (which is in Hesse-Kassel) Germany. However, there is reason to question that. According to information obtained from Gene Roeder in 2006, Georg Zülch was born 14 Oct 1826 in Raboldshausen, Hesse-Kassel. The son of Lorenz Zülch and Anna Catharina Schuch. (from church records in Raboldshausen per Gene Roeder). However a search of actual church records in Raboldshausen reveals that on that date Anna Catharina Schuch, a single woman, had an illegitimate child, George Schuch. Those same church records show that three and one half years later Anna Catharina Schuch married Lorenz Zulch. The presumption must have been that George Schuch took Lorenz's family name and then later emigrated to the United States as George Zulch.

However, there is very strong evidence that George Schuch of Raboldshausen emigrated to Ohio using his own name, showing that George Schuch and George Zulch are two different people. It is even noted in Raboldhausen records that George Schuch, along with his Uncle Ludwig and Ludwig's family emigrated together to America. George, Ludwig and family ended up in Cincinnati, Ohio. There is evidence that these Cincinnati families are the ones mentioned in the Raboldshausen records. We have no corroborating evidence that our George Zulch came from Raboldhausen. The fact that there is a George Schuch whose mother married a Zulch in Raboldhausen could be nothing more than a coincidence.

The Cincinnati family was involved in testifying in the divorce case of the Cincinnati George Schuch and his wife. The daughter of Ludwig, whose name is Elizabeth Springer testified that George Schuch was her half-brother. George Schuch of Bay City would be her first cousin. It is possible that Ludwig had a child with another woman than Elizabeth's mother and that person is the Cincinnati George Schuch. Whereas, then George Zulch would be the Nephew mentioned in the Raboldhausen records.

I reviewed Raboldhausen birth and confirmation records online on archion.de. I was unable to find a record for another George Schuch.

We have at least 8 autosomal DNA matches to descendants of Johann Georg Schuch, who would be Georg Zulch's grandfather if he is the son of Anna Catharina Schuch. Two of those matches are to descendants of George Schuch of Ohio. So apparently both George's are closely related to each other and most likely both came from Raboldshausen. The fact that George Zulch's death record had a birth date of October 14th, although the wrong year (his daughter who reported, presumably knew his birthday but was confused on the actual year of birth) gives support to the theory that George Zulch was actually born Georg Schuch and the other Georg Schuch was someone else who is also connected with the same family. Very confusing.

In 1866 Hesse-Kassel was annexed to and became a part of Prussia. Today Raboldshausen (50.9166667° North, 9.5333333° East) is a part of the German state of Hesse.

    DATE OF IMIGRATION: Unknown

MILITARY: On 4 Aug 1862 George Zulch of Detroit joined the 24th Michigan Infantry at Fort Wayne, Detroit, Michigan.

On 1 Jul 1863 George Zulch was present when Confederate forces attacked Union forces at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. George Zulch's military records show that after the first day of the three day battle of Gettysburg, he was reported as killed in action. Fortunately for George and for his descendants, he was found 16 days later in a hospital in Little York, Pennsylvania with grievous, but not fatal, wounds. He was admitted into the hospital under the name of George Celce?. The army changed his status to Wounded In Action.

He was released from the hospital on 24 Dec 1863, whereupon he was assigned to the Veterans Reserve Corps (VRC). The VRC is a place for combat unfit soldiers where they are assigned light duty. For example, guarding prisoners or public buildings, honor guard duty or anything they can do to free up able bodied men for the fighting. He was released from the service 14 Nov 1865 and returned home to 416 W Fort St, Detroit, Michigan.

His wounds included a rifle ball (bullet) which went completely through his right ankle. Another rifle ball entered his left upper thigh and exited his left buttocks shattering his hip. He also had a forehead wound which was not serious enough to warrant anything on his disability pension, although he complained of severe, continuous headaches later in life.

MARRIAGE: George Zulch married Christina Amalia Theresia Thuemler (b. 1834-1835 in Saxony) abt. 1855 (date based on the birth of their first child). We assume they were married in the United States, based on the fact that they were from geographically different parts of Germany. On one census entry, their first born child lists her birth state as Maryland, although she lists Michigan on other census records. Also, her parents listed her birth state as Michigan on the 1860 census while they lived in Detroit. Therefore we say that it is possible that they both immigrated to the United States by 1855, at some point lived in Maryland and by 1860 had moved to Michigan. She died 16 Oct 1889. She took extremely ill while cooking dinner and died shortly after the doctor arrived at her house on Webster St. She is buried at Pine Ridge in Bay City.

He married second to Jane (Janette) Chapman (b. 1832 in Ireland) on 9 Jul 1890. The name George Zulch was used on the marriage certificate. When Jane Chapman died on 2 Jun 1898 the death certificate listed her name as Mrs. George Seeley. They had no children together.

NAME CHANGE: By 1880 George and his family had become Americanized. He, his wife and children appeared on the 1880 census with the last name of Seeley. Most documents after that used the name Seeley with some exceptions. His pension still came to George Zulch at 912 Webster St, Bay City. Although for most (but not all) years the Bay City city directory showed George Seeley living at that address. His children always appeared thereafter as Seeley.

DEATH: George Zulch died 11 Oct 1905. His death certificate and the cemetery records both show the Seeley name. He is buried in Elm Lawn in Bay City with his second wife. However he does not have a gravestone. The burial itself was paid for by the County.

We have been unable to locate Sarah Phelps on the 1860 census.

Our next record of her is her marriage 15 Dec 1861 in Fairgrove, Tuscola, Michigan.

The census records for 1870 and 1880 show her living in Fairgrove.

She lived in Fairgrove near William and Henrietta Irish and apparently had a close relationship with them. We find Sarah's name on the wedding records of two of Williams daughters, Mary as a witness and Sophronia as a mother! (This was after Sophronia’s mother, Henrietta had died, either an error or an honorary title???)

Tuscola County Deed Record. 28 May 1884 Sarah R, Shultz Purchased 40 acres from Joseph R. Shultz for $700 (NW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of section 14 of Town 13 of Range 8E). The sale of his share of the real estate to the wife is suggestive of a divorce settlement. Although later she is listed as a widow.

Sometime between 1884 and 1889 her Husband Joseph had died. She moved to Bay City, Bay, Michigan and is listed in the 1889 City directory as ‘widow of Joseph’. Also on the 4 census records from 1900 to 1930 she is listed as a widow.

On the 1894 Michigan Census and the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 Federal census she is living in Bay City at 515 Polk. The Bay City city directory lists her address as a dairy. Her occupation selling milk.

She died in Bay City on 8 Apr 1932. She is buried in Fairgrove (AKA Brookside) Cemetery. Her stone reads Sarah R Schultz 1846-1932. (most documentary information has her born in 1845 including census records for 1850, 1855, 1920, 1930, her marriage certificate and her newspaper obit)

She is mentioned as a surviving sister in the 1923 obituary of her brother Andrew J Phelps of Fort Edward, NY.
On 14 Mar 1878 Sarah R. Shultz of Tuscola County, Michigan received consideration of $5 to sign off her interest as an heir of Norman Phelps Jr in the real estate of which was transferred by Norman Phelps Sr (to his children in 1839), lot 53, Lake George Tract in Fort Ann, NY. (on file with the Washington County, New York, Clerk) -see Norman Phelps, Jr property notes.
listed in 1889 Bay City directory Schultz Sarah, widow joseph, res 515 Polk

4/16/08 Terry had conversation with Dorothy Seeley (daughter of Harry Seeley). Dorothy remembers her Gramma (Sarah Phelps) Schultz. This gramma used to go for walks by Dorothy's house and then stop in to say hi. Then she would go home. Dorothy just a little girl then, remembers Gramma Schultz (our Sarah) as a tiny short little lady. Uncle Reube used to live with her she told me.

8/16/18- notes from terry on cemetery.:
Lot numbers online for Brookside are not right. In Lot #449 are per Brookside records (which began after 1921 Sexton house fire):
Grave 1 west side, no stone is Eunice (Bills) Schultz
Grave 2 West side is Sarah R. Schultz
Grave 4 East half is Wm. Schultz
Grave 4 West is H. Schultz

No other burials are listed in the Sexton records as being in lot 449. The lots are all 8 people lots with 4 buried on East and 4 buried on West. The Sexton said the grave #s meaning grave 1,2 etc and the east & west info could be mixed up. He has the longitudinal and latitude directions for them also.

The Sexton told me an interesting story. As we know Brookside began around 1898 when the owner of the property where Hinson cemetery was wanted all graves removed from his land. So graves and markers were removed. The Sexton Doug Foster remembers his brother’s telling him how they would go look for Indian arrowheads on the Land where the Hinson cemetery was 50 years ago when they were kids. They seen grave stones when looking for the arrowheads. So obviously not all were removed. Now there are wind turbines going up in that area so digging is going on.
