    ANN ELIZA (OSBORNE) UNKNOWN

    BIRTH:
Abt 1827 in Kings, New York -per census records 1865, 1870, 1875.

    PARENTS:
    Unknown.
Father’s name may be McPherson. See reasoning below).

    MARRIAGE:
    William E Osborne.
Marriage date by 1855 for birth of William and certainly by 1859 (based on William E and Ann E signing off on a real estate deed in connection with his father’s estate). Her maiden name may be McPherson. Her son in law, Cornelius Melvin, listed Eliza McPherson as his first wife (who passed away) on a naval pension document. On a different document he listed his first wife as Lida Osborn. Perhaps Eliza was Lida’s correct name. Perhaps Mcpherson was her mother’s name at this time Lida was born. Which could indicate that Ann Eliza already had Lida before she married William E. (according to the New York State Census Ann Eliza was on her first marriage and William his second.) Also, on the 1865 New York State Census, a sister Emeline Mcfeeson (McPherson??) is living in the Osborne household. Emeline being 39 years younger than William and 14 years younger than Ann Eliza was probably the sister of Ann Eliza, not William.

Note about Cornelius Melvin: He seems to be loose with the names. He served two enlistments in the Navy as Cornelius H Melvin and two enlistments as Cornelius Higgins. His given reason, was because his mother did not want him to go back in, he signed up under a different name. We suspect it may be because he had a criminal record. He states that Higgens was his mother’s maiden name. But on all of the marriage records we have, he does not give a mother’s maiden name of Higgens!

    CENSUS RECORDS:
We cannot identify Ann Eliza in any census record prior to 1865.

    REAL ESTATE:
We have found no real estate transactions in the name of Wm E Osborn or his wife Ann Eliza, but she does appear in connection with the settlement of the estate of her husband’s father.
Deed filed 5 Sep 1859 in Monroe County, New York liber 172 p 118 in connection with the estate of Israel osborn, lists the following as his heirs at law:
William E Osborn and wife Ann Eliza Osborn
Nathaniel W Osborn and his wife Roxy S Osborn
John A McGonegal and wife the former Ursula Osborn
Franklin Leggett and wife Susan M Leggett (He is son of the deceased Mary Osborn)
    Charles I Osborn

    NEWSPAPERS:
    Obituary for her daughter Lida.
The Rochester Union Advertiser 4 May 1878
In this city, Friday afternoon, May ??, 18??(very fuzzy), Lida C Melvin, wife of Cornelius H Melvin, and daughter of William E and Ann Eliza Osborne, aged 34 years, 7 months and ? days.

    DEATH:
    Unknown

    BURIAL:
    Unknown

    CHILDREN:
Lida b. 1843 may have been the child of Ann Eliza before she married William E Osborne.
William b. 1855 was probably the child of William E (in particular the middle name of Hayden would seem to indicate he was named by Israel Osborn, after Israel’s mother Anna Hayden) and Lida.
The 1865 census listed that Ann Eliza who was on her first marriage had 4 children. Considering the 25 year age difference between William E and Ann E, the 4 children may have been William’s children or a combination of William’s and Ann’s children.
It is therefore a possibility that William had two or three children that we do not know about.
The theory that William H and Lida have different biological parents helps us make sense of the marriage of William H’s daughter (Lillian) to Lida’s son (Edgar). A first cousin marriage does not seem correct of people not living in a rural and/or isolated area. Also, the 25 year age difference makes it less likely that a 40 year old William married a 15 year old, which would be necessary for Lida to be his daughter.

    Notes:

According to family tradition William E was an inventor who had a patent for an improvement to the breech-loading cannon. Unable to sell or otherwise make money off his patent in the United States he traveled to Prussia and sold his idea for an unknown sum of money to Krupp Manufacturing, the well-known arms manufacturer in Germany. It is said that due to the cold weather, Mr. Krupp gave William E a heavy winter coat with gold buttons. After he returned to the United States, his brother Thomas stole his gold buttons! (names may have been changed in the retelling, we do not show a bother named Thomas).

    BIRTH:
Based on the Federal and State Census records William E Osborne was born 1801 to 1803 in Connecticut. (The handwriting on the 1865 New York State Census which could be Canada is obviously an error). His father Israel Osborne was living in East Windsor, Connecticut from 1796 or earlier to at least 1811 based on East Windsor Real Estate records). An 1855 passport record states that is was 50 years old and born in East Windsor, Connecticut (which would imply born 1805).

    MARRIAGE:
First wife- Unknown. We only know there is a first wife by the 1865 New York State Census where he states he was married 2 times.
Second wife- Ann Eliza Unknown. Marriage date by 1855 for birth of William and certainly by 1859 (based on William E and Ann E signing off on a real estate deed in connection with his fathers estate). Her maiden name may be McPherson. Her son in law listed Eliza McPherson as his first wife (who passed away) on a naval pension document. His first wife was Lida Osborne. Perhaps Eliza was Lida’s correct name. Perhaps Mcpherson was her mother’s name at the time Lida was born.

    DEATH: after 1878.
1878 is the last entry we find for William Osborne in the Rochester City Directory. We can find no record of William E Osborne after this date.

    CHILDREN:
Any children with his unknown first wife are unknown.
Lida b. 1843 may have been the child of Ann Eliza before they married.
William b. 1855 was probably the child of William E (in particular the middle name of Hayden would seem to indicate he was named by Israel Osborn (after Israel’s mother Anna Hayden) and his second wife.
The theory that William H and Lida are step-siblings helps us make sense of the marriage of William H’s daughter (Lillian) to Lida’s son (Edgar). A fufirst cousin marriage does not seem correct of people not living in a rural and/or isolated area. Also, the 25 year age difference makes it less likely that a 40 year old William married a 15 year old, which would be necessary for Lida to be his daughter.

    OTHER NOTES:
It should also be noted that William E's grandparents John Hayden and Anna Trumbull were first cousins. Also, his great grandparents Ammi Trumbull and Sabra Gaylor were 2nd cousins.

    • Residence: 1870, Rochester, Monroe, New York, USA
    • Residence: 1875, Rochester, Monroe, New York, USA

    Notes:

Little is known about Ann Eliza Osborne. We have identified her on three census records 1865, 1870, 1875 and one newspaper obituary for her daughter. As she is 25 years younger than her husband, we are suspicious that there may have been an earlier first husband. Which then throws the parentage of the children into question.

Her name appears as Anna, Ann E or Ann Eliza in the different records which we do have.

We have found one document referring to her daughter Lida Osborne as Eliza McPherson. Which raises the possibility that Lida's name earlier in life was McPherson. Perhaps Lida was married earlier or had a different father than William E. We have been unable to identify any census entries under that name. We have also found an 1865 census entry listing a sister (William's or Ann's?) as Emeline McFeeson, lending credence to the possibility Ann's maiden name is McPherson. The 1865 census lists she had 4 children and that this was her first marriage. Beyond Lida and William we do not know who the earlier children could be.

Much work needs to be done on this lady.

    Notes:

The name Israel Osborn(e) appears 4 times in the Barbour collection of Windsor Vital Records and zero times in the East Windsor Vital Records, however none of the entries are our Israel Osborne. It is important to be aware of these names to be able to avoid confusion as we are searching for our Israel Osborne. We have Israel, son of Samuel and Mary, born 6 Feb 1731/32; Israel who married Demaris Bancroft 18 Apr 1751(possibly the same as the previous Israel); Israel, the son of Israel and Demaris, born 26 Nov, 1753; and Israel born to Anna Stiles, 2 July 1751, reputed to be the son of Israel(again perhaps the first Israel we listed).

The spelling of his surname sometimes appears as Osborn and sometimes as Osborne or Osbourn. In the era we are investigating, the actual spelling did not make a difference. I am using Osborne to be consistent with today’s spelling, unless I am directly referencing a specific document, in which case I will use the actual spelling in that document.

    BIRTH:
1773. We presume he was born in Windsor or East Windsor, as that is where numerous descendants of John the immigrant reside. Although it is certainly possible that Israel is descended from another Osborne line which just happened to move into the same area as John’s line. We have no documentation of nor any indication of who his parents were. His gravestone in Tinker Cemetery, Henrietta, New York reads simply “Israel Osborn 1773 - 1859”. His age as given in the 1850 federal census would agree with 1773. His age as given in the 1855 New York census would agree with 1774.

    MARRIAGE:
By 1798 to Anna Hayden. Jabez Haskell Hayden in his 1888 book “Records of the Connecticut Line of the Hayden Family” states that Anna Hayden married Israel Osborn of East Windsor. Henry Stiles in his 1891 book “The History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor Connecticut 1635-1891” also states the same. Neither book gives a date. We estimate 1797 as the marriage year based upon the birth of their first child in 1798, although there is an unreferenced IGI entry which lists 1793 as the marriage date. (IGI records with only a year are usually unreliable, as the lack of a specific date indicates that the information probably did not come from a church, governmental or other marriage document). Anna was born Nov 1772, per the same books, to John Hayden and Anna Trumbull, both of East Windsor.

    DEATH:
Died July 1859 in Henrietta per the US Census Mortality Schedule (Henrietta, Monroe, New York) from 1860.

    BURIAL:
Buried in Tinker Cemetery in Henrietta, Monroe, New York.
    Gravestone inscription: Israel Osborn 1773-1859

    REAL ESTATE:
    East Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut:
1 Jul 1773. Lamson Wells purchased land from “Israel Osborn of East Windsor”. This is too early to be our Israel Osborne. Perhaps this is one of the Israel’s from Windsor which we listed earlier. East Windsor Real Estate Records 1-180 filed 3 Aug 1876.
24 Aug 1796. Israel Osborn purchases land from James Pease for 300 Pounds. Based upon the legal description we can tie this land in with all of the remaining transactions involving Israel Osborn in East Windsor. East Windsor Real Estate Records 8-47 filed 24 Aug 1876.

    CENSUS RECORDS:
1800 Federal. Israel Osbourn appears in East Windsor on page 4 of 13 in East Windsor. This census shows 16 Osborn households in East Windsor along with 1 more household in Windsor. Although there are 6 other Osborn households on page 4 in East Windsor, there is nothing to connect Israel Osborn to any of the other Osborn households. He is at least several households separated from the others. In 1800 Windsor has 11 pages and 1 Osborn household, while East Windsor has 13 pages and 16 Osborn households. This seems to be a disconnect from the numbers in 1810. I suspect that there are pages missing from the 1800 Windsor census.

    Males 26-44: 1 Israel 27

Israel married Anna Hayden about 1797. Anna (daughter of John Hayden and Anna Trumbull) was born on 12 Oct 1772 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut, USA; died in 1843 in Monroe, New York, USA; was buried in 1843 in Henrietta, Monroe, New York, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Other Events:

    • Name: Anne Heydon
    • Reference Number: 5869
    • Birth: Nov 1772, Connecticut, USA

    Notes:

Two books contain much information about the Heyden line and early Windsor, Connecticut families in general. They are the 1888 book “Records of the Connecticut Line of the Hayden Family” by Jabez Haskell Hayden and the 1891 book “The History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor Connecticut 1635-1891” by Henry Stiles.

    BIRTH:
12 Oct 1772 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut to “John and Anne Heydon”, per the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records. Both books list Anna Haydon being born Nov 1772 to John Haydon and Anna Trumbull. It should be noted that both books were published well before the Barbour collection of Connecticut Vital Records was published. The authors did not have this source available to them, thus they did not have an exact date of birth.

    MARRIAGE:
By 1798 to Israel Osborn. Both books list Anna’s marriage to “Israel Osborn of E Windsor” without giving a date.
