After years of seemingly unexplained DNA matches to our mother, we have finally came to the inescapable conlusion that our mother was the result of an extramarital affair between Mabel Seeley and an unknown male. A first cousin match, along with 2 half grand niece matches, a half grand nephew match and numerous other more distant matches showed that mother was a grandchild of Levi Phelps and Anna Degroat. The two different1/2 great niece matches, along with the others, showed quite convincingly that mother was the biological child of Glaud Phelps.

On the 1861 Canadian Census for Cramahe, Northumberland, Canada, his father & Aunt, Levi and Lucinda appeared in the household of Abert(age 54) & Abigail Porter(age 50). Also in the household children, Maurice Porter(age 25 and Porthena Porter(age 22). All were listed as born in the U.S. Willis appears on the 1861 Census in Brighton, Northumberland County. (Cramahe is about 11 miles from Brighton). We believe that his wife Sophronia died approximately 1861. This is probably indicative that she died prior to the 1861 census.

On the 1850 census in Ira, Cayuga, New York Willis (must be Levi) is listed as 6 months old on 8/10/1850.

Levi was a preacher for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints. Elder Levi Phelps had given sermons in Flint, Saginaw and Grand Rapids according to newspaper listings. By 1920 he was living in Saline, Missouri where his third wife Anna Bierie died in 1929. He appeared on the Saline census in both 1920 and 1930. He moved back to Michigan and died in Tuscola County in 1935 at the age of 85. He appeared on the 1930 census with a fourth wife, Louie(Louise/Lorie?). We know little about her. He was unmarried on his death certificate. His death certificate listed him as a retired minister.

Abner and Lydia are quakers in Yarmouth, Elgin County Ontario. We have multiple autosomal dna matches with Abner & Lydia although we do not know the exact relationship. Also both sisters had either a son or grandson of John Mills/Abigail Minard as a witness at their weddings in Canada. We also have multiple autosomal dna matches to John Mills/Abigail Minard, although we do not have the exact line fleshed out. Mary may be a granddaughter to them.

Based on numerous DNA matches we believe that Amasa Chase was the illegitimate father of Mary Mills. He was living in Yarmouth at the time. Numerous matches show that his DNA goes through Mary Mills line to her descendants. After Mary died, two of her children were 'adopted' by Amasa's sister, Phoebe Carpenter in Lapeer, Michigan. We believe Mary's mother was a child or grandchild of John Mills & Abigail Minard. Again, numerous DNA matches to Mills/Minard come through Mary's line. Mary would have grown up in one of the Mills households. Unfortunately, the 1851 census for the section of Yarmouth that the Mills family lived in is missing. The 1841 census was head of household only, and we cannot identify Mary. The 1861 Census shows Mary living with her husband, Anson Degroat.

In a will written in July 1883 (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89SC-B6MF) ( image 107 and image 111) by Sharley (Chase) Carpenter (sister of Phoebe Carpenter and brother of Amasa Chase), Sharley referred to her "niece Anna Maria Phelps" and on another page referred to her "niece Anna Mariah Phelps". Sharley also lived next door to Phoebe at the time. (The correct term should have been grandniece.) The other children of Mary Mills are not mentioned.

There is an 1851 mortgage foreclosure sale on his real estate in Ira, found on genealogybank.com. The Cayuga Chief 11 Nov1851 P.3. Willis executed a mortgage 6 Jul 1850. The foreclosure sale is 27 Nov 1851.

He appears on 1878 and 1880 Voter Lists in Lobo Township. But does not appear on the 1881 Census. We assume that he died prior to 1881.

Inscription on 2nd wife's gravestone, says in 1884 "wife of late W.H. Phelps"

Very little is known of my 3x great grandmother. I was able to connect with someone in North Dorchester, her only confirmed place of residence, and her marriage info was found. Mary Mills & Anson DeGroat wed on September 28, 1857 in Yarmouth, Elgin, Ontario. On the 1861 Census of Canada her estimated birth year was 1839 (Anson's was 1836, but actual year is 1833. I'm calculating that hers may have been fudged as well, at 1836). They had a daughter, Anna (1859). 4 years later, still in Canada, they had Lydia (Aug 1863). The family moved to Goodland, Lapeer, Michigan sometime between September 1863 and May 1866. Their daughter Mary was born there on June 12, 1866. Sometime between Mary Jr's birth, and Anson's next marriage on January 18, 1869, Mary Mills had died or abandoned her children. On the 1870 US Census, the 3 girls were with foster parents. Anna & Lydia were with the Carpenter's, and Mary Jr was with the McConnell's. Michigan death records were not kept formally until beginning in 1867, and fully by 1868. It is my conclusion that Mary did indeed die in Lapeer County. I will keep digging, and not let her slip through the cracks!!

In my search for Mills in or around North Dorchester (Middlesex County) and their marriage location (Elgin County) on the 1852 Census, I found a Mary Mills, born abt 1835, listed as Baptist, who was NOT living with her parents in 1861. Jesse, Matilda, Mary & siblings were in Southwold, Elgin County. Although the birth years are off (common occurrence), and the religion is different (she may have conformed to Anson), it seems to be the first real possibility I've found to who she is. I hope she didn't abandon these girls, and, I hope her death was not caused by Anson. (He remarried and abandoned a few times). I also thought she may have been buried in the local family plot on Henry Ruiter DeGroat's farm, but there seems to be no record of it. That burial ground was also known as Lum Cemetery, and is now Arcadia Township Cemetery. My guess is she is there with no record or headstone, or was returned to Canada. Her possible parents are in Iona Cemetery, but again, no record of her there either. The family had moved to Lambton County sometime between 1861 and 1871, so she may be buried in Lambton. She was so young and unexpected, they may have just buried her local to their current residence, versus going back to Elgin County, where Iona Cemetery and most of the family are.

A review of probate records shows that there is no record of probate for Mary or record of conservatorship for any of the children in Lapeer County.

A probate file at https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89SC-B6MF for Sharley Chase WIlson, daughter of Abner Chase and Lydia Mills refers to Anna Degroat Phelps (daughter of Mary Mills) as her niece. Niece would not be possible, however if Anna Degroat was her grandniece that would mean that a parent of Mary Mills would have been a sibling of Sharley. Thus, Mary Mills would be granddaughter of Abner Chase and Lydia Upton. The 1842 census of Yarmouth https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939D-VQCT-P?i=4&cc=1834342 shows 1 female under the age of 5 in the household of Abner Chase.

Per the Phelps Family book Simeon removed to Cato, New York at the age of nine with others. I believe that he moved with his father, as there are two Simeon Phelps in the Brutus census records, which is right next to Cato. The note in the Phelps book that his father died in Connecticut in 1786 has to be an error. The Phelps book also gives date and birthplace of 1st three children in Burton (Now called Allegeny) New York. Dates of birth were 1814, 1819 and 1823. I am suspicious of that entry as he appears in Cayuga County in the 1810 thru 1840 census, which is 150 miles away. I believe Burton is a transcription or typographical error and the places of birth were actually Brutus. However, I am unable to find citations for the birth records.

In the 1810 Federal census for Cayuga County there is 1 female child in the household of John Wetherby in the age range of Sophia. In the War of 1812 pension record of Simeon Phelps, two people state that they were present at the wedding of Simeon and Sophia which was held in the John Wetherby household in Brutus. One of those two furthur states that John Wetherby is the father of Sophia.

On Simeon Phelps probate filed in 1859, Sophia is administrator. Her mark is witnessed by David Wetherby and L.?. Wetherby. Also the inventory appraisers are Wm? Wood and Lyman Wetherby. Figuring that all of those Wetherby's are related to her. David Wetherby was b. 1820. Lyman Wetherby, his brother was b. 1804. They are children of John Wetherby b. 1778/Eunice Unknown.

It appears that John1778's first child was b. 1799, with some trees showing unknown child b. 1796. I have not found a source for the unknown child. (apparently from the age range of children on the 1810 census)

John1778/Eunice Unknown have a grandchild b. 1837 son of John named John Cutting Wetherby. (The Phelps book says Sophia was a daughter of Unknown Wetherby and Emma Cutting.)

John1778's parents were John Wetherby1745/Mary Newton.

John1745 had a child 1794 with Martha Sawtell (possibly his last child), a second marriage.

I could not find any probate records in Cayuga County for John Wetherby.

Cannot find her in the 1855 New York Census. It appears that Wayne County was not covered, although Cayuga was.

The 1850 census has Jannett Wetherby b. 1840 living in the household. Unable to place her. Also Almira/Elmira Williams b. 1848 in the household, who apparently is the child of David Williams (b. 1812 in Galen, Wayne, New York) and Philena Nickerson who live next door. Granger Phelps appears in the Williams household. Unable to find a Williams connetion to Sophia or Simeon.

per Canadian Quaker records Abner Chase along with his son Amasa and other children joined the Yarmouth, Ontario congregation in 1835. Based on numerous DNA matches to the Amasa Chase line, the John Mills/Abigail Minard line and the Isaac Huff/Sarah tripp line (all residents of Yarmouth Township) we believe that Amasa Chase was the illegitimate father of Mary Mills. The mother of Mary Mills would then have to be the daughter of James Mills (son of John/Abigial) and Jemima Huff (dau of Isaace Huff/Sarah Tripp). This is the only plausible scenario which explains the huge number of DNA matches to these 3 lines in Yarmouth Township and also explains Mary Mills using the Mills name. It also gives reason as to why Amasa Chase's sister, Phoebe (who lived in Tuscola County, Michign) took in two of Mary's daughters, Anna and Lydia Degroat, after Mary died in Tuscola, Michigan. I have been unable to find any record of a probate action filed in Tuscola County in regards to Mary's three 'orphaned' children. The father of Mary's three children, Anson Degroat, apparently abandoned the children. He remarried and moved to Kent County without them!

The 3rd daughter Mary ended up in the household of Eli McConnell, who had earlier moved from Yarmouth Township, Ontario to Lapeer County, Michigan.

Amasa married Hannah Mills. Hannah (daughter of James Mills and Jemima Huff) was born on 12 May 1822 in Yarmouth, Elgin, Ontario, Canada; died on 28 Apr 1856 in Canada; was buried in 1856 in Elgin, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
