3839 EXTRACT FROM "10 GENERATIONS OF THE DESCENDANTS OF CLAUDIN RUTTAN"

FIRST GENERATION

1. Claudin RUTTAN Furrier was born about 1564 in Saint-Mihiel, Lorraine, France. Died about 1613 in Saint-Mihiel, Lorraine, France.

ORIGINS: "The Ruttan family were huguenots who fled from France after the massacre of St. Bartholomew in 1572 and went to England, then back to Holland where they amassed a large fortune." (Reaman, 1964 pp. 218-219).

ORIGINS: "Dumont, a Judge of Saint-Mihiel, author of Nobiliaraire de Saint-Mihiel, printed in 1864 at Nancy, quotes an earlier author, one Dom Pelletier, who wrote Nobiliiaire de Lorraine, as placing the Rutants among the aristocratic families of France for over a century and as saying that it had been indicated, probably without proof, that the family came from England. Dumont goes on to say that the first of the name in Saint-Mihiel were of the middle class and were entirely engaged in commerce where by there knowledge and energy they prospered. He suggests that the first of the name could have been one Philippe who, in 1506, was a leading draper or cloth merchant. Ferri, said to be a son of Philippe, had a son Jean, who had four sons, Nicolas, Jaques, Jean, and Pierre. Dumont provides biographies of these four and of another member of the family named Florentine, who were enobled by Charles III, Duke of Lorraine, between 1567 and 1599. We are told by Dumont that Jean, in 1554, lent the Town of Saint-Mihiel fifty gold crowns to present to the Duchess of Lorraine and that in 1589 the Abbe of Saint-Mihiel bought from Jaques 'quantities of Buckram and Silk and Gold thread' required by Abbe Merlin for uniforms for his soldiers at the time of the Holy League. Many other Rutants are recorded as being appointed to high civil and military positions. So far as the writer knows, no evidence has been found that proves that the Rutans or Ruttans of America and Canada are direct descendants of the Rutants of Lorraine. But in the final paragraph of his record of Florentine and his family, Dumont states that it was often said that there were in Saint-Mihiel many other Rutants, nobelmen and commoners, who had not been listed in his book for lack of certainty. He mentions one Blaise Rutant, by profession a dealer in trimmings of lace and braid, who being unable to make a living in Saint-Mihiel, obtained permission to move to Metz, which he did in 1608. Dumont adds, 'he was a son of Claude.' Dumont closes by saying that, in 1636 other Rutants, descendants of Ferri, left Saint-Mihiel in order to avoid persecution as Protestants. The earliest documented records of the ancestors of the Rutan or Ruttan family of North america were found in the Saint-Mihiel civil registers of the year 1590 where Claudin Ruttan, furrier, and Catherine, his wife, are recorded as parents of Claude at his baptism on October 19, 1590." (Ruttan, 1986 pp.9-10).

He married Catharine about 1584 in France. Catharine was born about 1568 in Saint Mihiel, Meuse, France.

They had the following children:
+2 i. Blaise RUTTAN
+3 ii. Claude RUTTAN

Ruttan, Claudin (I7602)

3840 EXTRACT FROM "http://www.jgenea.com/Ruttan_Farmily_History.html"

1. FERRY1 RUTANT was born Abt. 1500 in St. Mihiel, Lorraine, France.

Notes for FERRY RUTANT: "The first record is of Ferry Rutan when he was mayor of St. Mihiel in 1534. The mob violence (of the religious war) struck first at St. Mihiel and the Rutan family fled to Metz where they established themselves in their various pursuits of good citizenship. It is to be noted that the records show this ancestry to be of noble birth, as a descendant of Ferry Rutan was exempt from tax in 1659 because of his "rank of the privileged."

There is no doubt but Blaise Rutan and Claude Rutant were children of Ferry Rutan or at least decendents. It is to be noted that each of these brothers, Blaise and Claude, had a son named Daniel, and Claude had a son Abraham, b. 1624.

"When the mob violence hit the city of Metz, the Rutan family, or at least some of them escaped with a party of friends, to Manheim, Lower Palatinate, Germany. Even there they were not safe as they were harassed by the French, so they moved on from Germany to Holland and then to America. (This is an error; the fact was that the former ruler of Manheim had died. He had given refuge to hundreds of the harassed Reformists. His successor was a strict Catholic and forced his subjects to follow his faith).

Child of FERRY RUTANT is:

2. i. FLORENTINE (BLAISE)2 RUTANT/RUTTAN, b. 1545, Metz, Nievre, Bourgogne, France; d. 1560.

Generation 2

2. FLORENTINE (BLAISE)2 RUTANT/RUTTAN (FERRY1 RUTANT) was born 1545 in Metz, Nievre, Bourgogne, France, and died 1560. He married MARGUERITE DECRAON. She was born 1545, and died 1600.

Notes for FLORENTINE (BLAISE) RUTANT/RUTTAN: The following statistics were obtained from papers belonging to Mrs. Abraham R. Rutan, Mrs. James Doty, Mr. Abram A. Rheutan, and Mrs. C. Wilson. Material was obtained from French documents and letters from various French officials.

The Rutan family is of remote antiquity. Proof has been uncovered in France of the family having come from noble blood and of its having been associated with the vicinity of St. Mihiel in Lorraine, and later of Metz in Moselle, during the l5th, l6th, and 17th centuries prior to the coming of the first member of its family to America. Some of the noblest families of France have been those whose names have become associated with Huguenot history and for many years prior to the Reformation their names had become famed for distinguished services, of such a family was the Rutan. Louis Moreri (1614 - 1680), French historian mentions the Rutant (old form of spelling) family as a distinguished one and Dom Pelletier, author of the Nobiliarire of Barrois", classes the Rutants amongst the aristocratic families of France for over a century. Among the first European members of the Rutan, or Rutant family of whom records can be found were Philip and Ferry Rutant. They, and their descendants, were residents of the town of St. Mihiel on the river LaMeuse in Lorraine, now the province of Meuse. The family was well known as drapers, or cloth merchants and manufacturers of laces, cloths, etc.

Child of FLORENTINE RUTANT/RUTTAN and MARGUERITE DECRAON is:

3. i. CLAUDE3 RUTANT/RUTTAN, b. Abt. 1560, Saint-Mihiel, Lorraine, France; d. Abt. 1613, Saint-Mihiel, Lorraine, France.

3854 Farmer from Berghausen, Braunfels, Germany. Son of the widow of Bernhardt Becker.

There are three Becker families on the Kukkus First Settlers List (David, Balthasar and Johann Adam). All three originate from Berghausen, Solms-Braunfels Principality, Hessen, Germany. From information in the Solms-Braunfels Archives we know that David is the son of Bernhardt Becker, but the other Beckers are not mentioned in that document. Birthdates for the three are 1743, 1745 and 1747.

Information from the Ortsfamilienbuch of Werdorf, Braunfels shows that the three above mentioned Kukkus immigrants are indeed all children of Johann Bernhard Becker. Unfortunately, the mothers name is not listed.

Name David Becker of Berghausen appears in Solms-Braunfels Archives as asking to emigrate to Volga Russia in 1766. It is also mentioned that he is the son of Bernhardt Becker. The other two Beckers are not mentioned in those archives. All three Becker families in Kukkus are from Berghausen, the same town in Braunfels. David and Balzer are in the same family group on the transport List. Johann Adam does not appear on the transport list (It is not complete).

Marquadt & Mai #344: David Becker from Berghausen in the area of Gräfenstein & Anna Maria Steckenmeister from Allendorff in the area of Gräfenstein, married 17 May 1766 in Friedburg.

1766 Kuhlberg List #3551

Wife: Margaretha

David Becker, ref
Wife: Anna Margreta

1767 Kukkus First Settler List #31
Age 22, ref, farmer from Berghausen, Braunfels
Wife: Katharina Elisabeth 21
Daughter: Anna Margaretha 2 weeks

The wife of David Becker b. 1745-1748 is listed on four different documents as Margaretha (in 1766), Anna Margaretha (in 1767), as Katharina Elisabeth (in 1767) and is Margaretha in 1798 as the widow of David Becker. If the 1767 document was incorrect we could assume that Anna Margaretha was his only wife. Otherwise we would have to assume multiple wives to make sense of this. The church book of Werdorf identifies has wife as Anna Maria Steckenmesser of Allendorf. According to Marquadt & Mai #344: David Becker from Berghausen in the area of Gräfenstein & Anna Maria Steckenmeister from Allendorff in the area of Gräfenstein, married 17 May 1766 in Friedburg. For now we are assuming that Anna Maria and Anna Margaretha are the same person and that the listing of Katharina Elisabeth is a mistake.

To assume otherwise would imply the existence of 4 different wives, 2 named Margaretha, one Katharina Elisabeth and one named Anna Maria.

Sandra McFall, married August 26, 1967 in Cheboygan, Cheboygan County, Michigan. Daughter of Kenneth Alvin McFall and Alice Rosalie Kunz. Source: Cheboygan County Marriage Records.

Phillip Allen Shawl Jr., 76, was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather who passed away at his home Nov. 3, 2021 due to a battle with lung cancer. He was born May 19, 1945 in Cheboygan, MI. - the son of Phillip and Ada (Rabideau) Shawl. He grew up and lived his entire life in Cheboygan. Phillip married Sandra McFall of Onaway August 26, 1967. Phillip retired from Cheboygan Area Schools in 2007 where he was a custodian and bus driver for 21 years. He also served in the National Guard for six years.
His true love was being an avid outdoorsman. Hunting, Fishing, and Trapping kept Phil busy all year long. During the spring and early fall, young Phil and family could be found perch fishing on Drummond Island. Come late fall and early winter Phil turned to the woods of Onaway where he found the most joy in preparing his family for a successful deer season. Watching his family get a buck year after year because of his teachings was the ultimate prize for Phil, nothing made him happier. Come winter, Phil was a professional trapper along the waterways of Cheboygan. He was a frequent participant in the Fur Harvesters Auction out of Ontario, Canada, where he received top awards for processing his beaver, otter, mink, and fox furs.

3867 Find a Grave shows him born 1852. That cannot be correct. His fathers death record has him dying in 1848. I am estimating that he was born about 1848. In fact, his father's death record states 'estimated birth year'. It also states mother of Jane Phelps and father of Perkins. Perkins, James A (I12841)

(from Upton Family Records being Genealogical Collections for an Upton Family History by William Henry Upton published 1893)

Notes for John Upton from The Essex Genealogist:
Family tradition relates the John was a Scottish prison of war, taken by Cromwell at either the battle of Dunbar in 1650, or the battle of Worcester in 1651. There is nothing to document this heritage, however, the circumstantial evidence is strong: the timing of his arrival in the colonies; his marriage to a woman named Stuart; a son named James, lack of membership in a Congregational church; and as a final touch, the seal of a fleur-de-lis on his will. John, a blacksmith, came to Hammersnith (Lynn) about 1652, but removed to Salem where he bought land in 1658. John and Ellenor had at least thirteen children, of whom six sons and two daughters were living at his decease. By is will he apportioned his landed estate to his sons, and it appears, desired it should always remain in the family, as he notes that they "nor their children shall not sell or give or in any way dispose of the same without it be to and among them." (NEHGR, Jan 1875 P2)

This website, "https://www.geni.com/projects/Scots-Prisoners-and-their-Relocation-to-the-Colonies-1650-1654/3465" , lists John Rupton as one of the indentured servants at the Saugus Iron Works. Very possibly this is a misspelling on John Upton's name. The indentured servants arrived in Saugus in Nov 1650 to begin their 7 years of servitude. Thus Nov 1757 as the completion date. Then Isaac Upton first appears in Lynn records in 1658.

A document from the R Stanton Avery Special Collections Dept at the New England Historic Genealogical Society has a listing of 35 Indentured Servants at the Saugus Iron Works who were captured 3 Sept 1650 at the Battle of Dunbar. The name John Rubton appears on the list. I assume that the parenthesis around the name indicate that the handwriting in the original document was difficult to read. The John Rupton name may have come from this same document. I have not seen the original document.
