4401 James R. Felsing
James "Jim" Ronald Felsing of Coleman passed away July 9, 2020 after a five-year battle with cancer. He was 72. He was loved by all and will be missed by many.
Jim served in the Michigan National Guard for 31 years and retired in 2000. He served as a staff sergeant in the Saginaw Unit, B Company of the First Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment.
Jim was an active member of the community. He was a reserve cop in Coleman for two years, he served as an officer at the Sanford Eagles club for 26 years and was a major part of the great charity work the club does. He was also a member of the Sanford American Legion and the Sanford Moose Lodge. He participated in the color guard for the Memorial Day parade and he would also volunteer playing taps for fallen veterans and was a licensed ordained minister. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family.
Jim is survived by his wife, Cathy Felsing of 43 years; daughters, Lisa (Eric) Cupal, Misty (Dan) Jablonski; son, James (Raquelle) Felsing; four grandchildren, Winter (Mason) Lynch, Piper (Jake) Felsing, Riley and Addison Jablonski; great-grandchild, Ellie Felsing; sister, Judith (Richard) Voorhees. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry; mother, Lydia Felsing; and two brothers, David and Jeff Felsing.
A memorial service will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Sanford Eagles club would be appreciated.
Felsing, James Ronald (I29)

4402 Jan 1852 be 60 on 21 Nov DeGroat, Peter Ezera (I6796)

4403 Jan Beselie (whose name also appears as Baysley, Beasly & Bezelie) was born in France. Hew married Grace about 1683 based on birth of children. He died between 16 March 1687 (when he baptized a son) and 19 feb 1689 when his widow remarried. Beselie, Jan (I9735)

4404 Jan was likely born in abt 1674 in France or England. His parents, Jean Le Fauchuer and Judith Enrion, are known to have been living in England and part of the ThreadNeedle Huguenot Church in London in 1682 at the birth of his brother, Pierre.[1][2]

Jan and Eva (his wife) Fouseer are 18th and 19th on the member list of the The Old Dutch Sleepy Hollow Reformed Church, Sleepy Hollow, Westchester County, New York.[3][4]

Disputed Death information
Jan's death date is uncertain. A "Jan Forseur" is buried in Harringtown, Bergen County, New Jersey, United States, but no date is given. Some unverified family trees show a date of 1732, others show a date of 1783 (which seems unlikely). A Find-a-grave entry is connected to this Jan, but some of the information is incorrect or can not be verified (For example Jan's father is shown married to Jan's wife and the children are not correct).[5] Further, Jan's father (of the same name) is given the same death date and location by some researchers.

A "Jan Vosie" is a baptism witness for Jan's son Isaac's child in baptism in 1757. It is possible that Jan was still living at this time or this Jan may be a relative.[6]

Marriage & Children
He married Eva Matthys in abt 1696 in New York.[citation needed] He was 22 and Eva was 21 when they wed.

Alternate Surnames
David Cole, 1822-1903, who researched this family and several others for his 1876 book about the Cole Family, had this to say:

"The original name we think was 'Forsieur.' On the Reformed Church records it is most frequently written 'Forseur.' Other orthographies, which abound, as Fosjeur, Forsheur, Faseur, Fashaw, etc., are blunders of copyists. These are found in almost endless variety. Some of them so disguise the name that none but those familiar with the family connections could possibly detect it. The numerous descendants now write it Vorseur, Forseur, Forshee, Forshay, etc. One, a physician residing in Philadelphia, Pa., writes his name William W. Fouche. But the original, we think, was 'Forsieur.' In pronunciation, it followed the analogy of the familiar French term of address-'Monsieur.' The proverbial difticulty of this combination of letters to one not born to the French is sufficient to account for all the corruptions in spelling and pronunciation which, among a Holland people, grew in back centuries upon the word 'Forsieur.'
[16]
Theodore Melvin Banta 1834-1910, author of The Banta Genealogy notes:

:"Magdalena Banta married Jonathan Forseur, who was born January 15, 1733. She died 1776-7, and was buried in the old churchyard at Kakiat, Rockland County, N.Y. The names of their descendants are variously spent Forshay, Foshay, etc."

4411 Jesse Zephaniah Shultz was born in Michigan on 20 Sep 1853 (date per the inscription on his gravestone) to Jesse K Shultz and Hannah Mayberry.

In the 1860 census (indexed under Sultz) we find him living in Juniata, Tuscola, Michigan with his mother and other siblings.

In 1866 Jesse's sister, Lucinda and her husband Jesse Fox were named guardians of Jesse Z along with his siblings, Thomas and Harriet.(Tuscola County probate packet 1-89)

In 1870 we have a possible census entry in Luzerne County, Pa where a J Z Shultz (indexed as J G Shultz on ancestry.com), age 17, born in Michigan is living in the household of Samuel Gibbons (this may be his mother's brother) as a laborer. Everyone else in the household was born in Pennsylvania. It may be reasonable to assume that after the mother died in 1865 (the father having died in 1853), the family dispersed.

On 31 March 1875 Jesse Z married Mary Francis Dawson in Botetourt, Virginia per Virginia Marriage records.

In 1880 we find Zeph Schultz (age27,born Mich) and Francis Schultz (age26, born VA) living in Sherman, Grayson, Texas with their two children Jesse (age 4, born VA) and Freddie (age 2, Born W VA).

In 1888 we find the following birth record in the North Carolina Birth Index,1800-2000; (on ancestry.com.)
DOB: 7/20/1888
Name: Claire Schultz
Sex & Race: F W
Father: Jesse Z Schultz
Mother: Mary F Dawson
POB: Salisbury (Rowan County, North Carolina)
Vol: 196
Page: 112
(This is a delayed birth entry, it is not stated what the date of record was)

In 1900 we find in Buchanan, Botetourt, Virginia:
Jesse Z Schultz (indexed on ancestry.com as Ira Schultz) Sept 1853 Mi
Frannie wife (indexed as Fannie) Nov 1853 VA
Fred son July 1878 W VA
Roy son Sept 1884 VA
Claire daughter July 1888 NC
Paul son Nov 1892 VA
Andrew son Jan 1895 VA

In 1910 we find Jesse Z Schultz(Age 55, born MI) living in Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennesee with his wife Mary F(age 56, Born VA) and two children Paul G (age 17, Born VA) and Andrew K (age 14, born VA).

In 1920 We find Jesse Z Schultz living in the household of William M Bogart in Stevenson, Jackson, Alabama. Jesse is listed as father-in-law. Jesse’s daughter Clair is married to William Bogart. (a oneworldtree entry for the Bogart family shows William Bogart married Clair Schultz who was born 20 July 1889).

In 1930 we find Jesse Z Schultz living in the household of William M and Claire Bogart in Stevenson, Jackson, Alabama.

A transcription of the Stevenson City Cemetery located on-line at <http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/al/jackson/cemeteries/stevcity1.txt>
shows the following entries:

JESSE Z. SCHULTZ 9-20-1853 3-20-1933
MARY F. SCHULTZ 11-16-1853 1-16-1918
CLAIRE SCHULTZ BOGART 1888 1971

4412 JHS Notes:
In 1850 she was 2, and in 1857 she was 9. Given the dates of the revision lists, both ages tie back to 1848. If she was born in Feb 1847 these would clearly be 3 and 10.
AHSGR Fresno notes give her death date as 13 Nov 1912 with an age of 64 years, 8 months, 20 days. This would suggest a birth date of about 24 Feb 1848.
However, the same notes give a birth date of 23 Feb 1847, and her birth year is 1847 on her grave marker.
I think 24 (or 23) Feb 1848 is actually correct. AHSGR Fresno notes are generally more accurate on the ages rather than the dates, and I'm inclined to think someone subtracted and came up with the wrong date.
Ihave her as born 23-24 Feb 1848 with a note that her grave marker is believed to have the wrong year.

Kile, John Sr (I2114)

4421 John Burrows was born at Wethersfield, Hartford County, CT in 1642. He was the son of Robert and Mrs. Mary (Ireland) Burrows. He was married in New London County, CT on 14 December 1670 to Hannah Culver. Hannah was the daughter of Edward and Ann Ellis Culver. She was born 11 Apr 1651 and died abt. 1731. John Burrows became a freeman in October 1669 at New London, CT. The part of New London that he lived in became Groton in 1705. He was the sole heir of his father and inherited a large amount of land.
John and Hannah Burrows became members of the First Congregational Church of Stonington, CT on 3 January 1685/86. The members who lived long distances from the church petitioned for a site for a church on the Groton side of the river. The pastor, Rev. Saltonstall opposed this and the differences became bitter. John Burrows must have been on who opposed the pastor's views, because there is a record "John Burrows was re-admitted July 20, 1701, having been suspended for offense to Mr. Saltonstall".
On 12 February 1716, John Burrows died at Groton, CT without leaving a will. He had previously given his large land holdings to his son, John. His inventory was valued at 249 pounds, 6 shillings and 4 pence. Among the items found in the inventory of his estate was "1 bedd and beding for the negro Gearle". John is buried in the Wightman Burying Ground at Groton, CT. His grave is covered with a large flat stone known as a "wolf stone" to keep the grave from being dug up by animals.

4425 John Porter was baptized at Felstead, Essex, England 21 Jun 1594 the son of John Porter and Sybyl Vessey. (TAG:18P56-60)

He married Anna White, dau of Robert White of Shalford and Bridget Allgar of Messing, in Messing on 18 Oct 1620. She was baptized at Shalford 13 Jul 1600. (TAG:18P56-60)

I see different dates for his entry into New England in various on-line genealogies. The problem being that there were three different John Porter immigrants into New England in these early years. Records of one are being confused with another. Our John Porter arrived in New England in late 1638 or early 1639 and immediately settled at Windsor. He died 21 Apr 1649 at Windsor. His wife Anna had died 21 Apr 1648 also in Windsor. (TAG16:P49-53)

John Porter and Anna White have many descendants, including Marlon Brando, John Brown (The Abolitionist), Anthony Perkins, William Williams (signor of the Declaration of Independence) and three U.S. Presidents, Grover Cleveland, Ulysses Grant and Gerald Ford.

4430 Joseph apparently died between 1880 and 1889. Joseph appears in the 1880 census. In the 1889 Bay City Directory, Sarah is listed 'widow of Joseph'.

Unable to find death record in tuscola, bay or saginaw.

No record of Joseph Schultz in the Tuscola County Probate Index.

Tuscola County Deed Record. 28 May 1884 Sarah R, Shultz Purchased 40 acres from Joseph R. Shultz for $700 (NW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of section 14 of Town 13 of Range 8E). The sale of his share of the real estate to the wife is suggestive of a divorce settlement. Although later she is listed as a widow.

4431 Joseph Pope's English origins have not been proven.

Joseph Pope and his wife were among the core group of early adherents to Quakerism in Salem, were frequently presented in Court and fined for absence from Church, and were excommunicated from Salem church.

4432 JOSEPH WISE

Numerous on-line genealogies have Joseph as the child of John Wise and Abigail Gardner of Ipswich. This is a mistake and the mistake is repeated on-line many hundreds of times. That John Wise did have a son named Joseph Wise born abt 1686. That Joseph married Martha Appleton and later died in 1745. This is not the same person.

On-line trees also show birth date for joseph wise of 22 Mar 1695 in Somerville, Somerset, New Jersey. That is not the dob or pob of the Joseph Wise, son of John Wise and Abigail Garner. But I have not been able to find any confirmation of it.

Many on-line sources have his death in 1783, which is not the dod of the other Joseph Wise. But I have not been able to find any confirmation of this.

Bottom line is that the only record we have of Joseph is the marriage record to Hepzibah and him being listed as the father on all of the childrens birth records. Nothing to indicate, age, place of birth or date or location of death.

We suspect that the father of Joseph may be Thomas Wise, a mariner from Ipswich who first bought land in Gloucester in 1704, and who moved from there to Attleboro in 1723, where he died in 1728. His will dated 1728 mentions a son named Joseph. Our Joseph is the only Joseph Wise of the right age who shows up in the records of either Gloucester or Attleboro.

4436 JUNIATA

This town is bounded on the north by Fair Grove, having Denmark on the west, Vassar to the south and Indian Fields east. Cass River flows through the southeast corner of the town, about three sections lying to the south and east of the river. The most of the town is rolling; about one-third perhaps, in the southeast corner, along the river, being level and having a more sandy soil than the other two-thirds, which is generally a clay loam.
This was among the earliest settled towns in the county. The first settlers in the town were Levi Rogers and family, who came in early in 1850. The first blow struck for improvement was by Andrew Jackson Rogers on land which his father had purchased of Townsend North. From Levi Rogers the town took the name of Rogers under which it was organized.
Shortly after came two German families, and about the same time William Jameson, Jonas Belknap, Ezra A. Belknap, John Freeman, S. H. Moore, Daniel Gorton Truman, and within the next two years Patrick McGlone, Ephraim Smith, Frank Fairhan, Daniel Kinyon, King Allen, Hiram Gibbs, Lucius Marvin, James Wing, Henry S. Russell, William Law, Andrew Schultz, Nelson Vickery, William Fenner, Daniel T. Tonkrey, E. Miller, R. G. Black.
Until 1852 the only roads were the lumberman’s supply and logging roads, very serviceable in winter but almost impassable in spring and summer. In 1852 a road was laid out from the present site of Watrousville which was cut through in 1853, the people generally turning out and helping to open the road. The commissioners to lay out this road were Jackson Rogers and William Jameson. Martin Miller, of Tuscola, was surveryor.

Breunig, Kilian (I2959)

4464 Known as Albert Shultz or C. Albert Shultz he was a Civil War veteran with the 2nd Michigan Infantry, spent about 10 months as a Prisoner of War in Petersburg, Virginia and died shortly after being discharged from the service and returning home. This information is based on the following evidence:
Going to the website <http://www.suvcwdb.org/home/search.php?action=search> , (which is the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War which is the successor organization to the GAR Civil War veterans organization) and searching for Albert Shultz; I come up with an Albert Shultz, born 1840, Company F, 2nd Michigan Infantry, enlisted or reenlisted on 31 Dec 1863, promoted to Corporeal on 25 May 1864, Prisoner of War 30 Jul 1864 in Petersburg, Virginia, returned 18 May 1865 and discharged 28 July 1865. There is also an abbreviation DisFD which has to do with a disability discharge.

An on-line listing of the Watrousville Cemetery at <http://www.interment.net/data/us/mi/tuscola/watrous/index.htm>
shows:
Schultz, C A, Co A F 2nd MI Inf
Schultz, Hannah, d. 10 Dec 1865, 50y 1m 5d
Schultz, J K, d. 21 Aug 1853, 41y 11m 21d

From the probate files we know that the child known as Albert Shultz (also known as C. Albert Shultz or Charles Albert Shultz) died before 1866. As he was alive in the 1860 census, that gives us a 6 year window for his date of death.
His enlistment records shows that in Dec 1863 he was 20 years 10 months old, (although census records showed him to be 4-5 years older) a resident of Watrousville and born in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. He signed his name Albert Shults.

An online listing of Michigan Civil War Rosters (<http://www.michiganinthewar.org/infantry/2compf.htm>) lists Albert Shultz age 21 of Genesee County, Michigan in Company F, 2nd Michigan Infantry.

The ancestry.com civil war database lists Albert Shultz of Genesee County enlisted in Company F, 2nd Michigan Infantry on 24 May 1861 at Fort Wayne, Michigan. He was 21. He received a disability discharge on 28 Jul 1865.

His war Department record reads:

“Captured at Petersburg, Va July 30, 1864, paroled at James River, Va Feb 22, 1865, reported at Camp Parole, Md., date not given, sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, Feb 26, 1865, reported there March 4, 1865 and sent to Columbus, Ohio, April 25, 1865. He rejoined Co. May 25, 1865. Was admitted to Carver General Hospital Washington D.C. June 22, 1865, from regimental hospital with Chronic Pneumonia and was transferred July 11, 1865. Entered Stanton General Hospital Washington D.C. July 17, 1865 with congestion of the lungs, was discharged from service at this hospital July 28, 1865, on Surgeons Certificate of disability.”

Army of the United States Certificate of Disability for Discharge states that Albert Shultz was incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of: “Phthisis Pulmonalis acquired since enlistment by exposure while a prisoner at Danville, Virginia from July 1864 to February 1865-Disability total. Signed July 28, 1865 at Stanton General Hospital Washington, D.C.

On 28 May 1866 his name is mentioned in the “estate of C.A. Shultz” in Tuscola County Probate records, so he died sometime before that.

This brings up some questions. Did he stay hospitalized after discharge or was he simply sent home? Did he die at home? I would think that likely he died of Chronic Pneumonia brought on by the conditions at the POW camp. So although he did not die as a prisoner of war, he most likely died as a result of being a prisoner of war.
