4601 Many published genealogies list his birth date as 20 Sep 1703, but nowhere can I find the source of that date. The Barbour collection of Connecticut births lists the birth of 8 or Joseph's 10 children. Only John and Edward are not found. His fathers will in 1716 lists him as 16 years old. His death record lists him as 68 in 1769. There is some doubt then as to the actual birth date.

The Phelps Family Book has Anna Hosford as the mother of the first 6 children and has her dying in about 1740. It then has her sister Mindwell Hosford as the mother of the last 4 children.

The Hosford Book, which I have not seen, supposedly on page 33 has Anna as the mother of all the children and as living until at least 1773. It has Mindwell marrying Daniel Tillotson and moving to New Hampshire where she died in 1807 on page 35. Obviously it would be nice to find a copy of that book.

The History of Ancient Windsor by Stiles on P. 568 shows John as marrying 2nd to Mindwell (Hosford?). The last name being in parenthesis with a question mark indicates that the name is uncertain.

The Barbour Collection of records shows Mindwell marrying Daniel Tillotson on 16 Sept1742 in Tolland. It does not show a second marriage for John. It shows the birth of the first 7 children, noted as son of John, without listing the mother. The last 3 children do not show.

The will of John Phelps in 1769 shows his wife's name as Anne and also shows the names of the remaining children.

My conclusion is that Anna Hosford was the mother of all the children.

4602 Many trees show a father of Walter Cadwell born 1604 in Scotland. I cannot locate a source for this.

Copied from a website, this illustrates the problem with Walter:
10th great grandfather: Walter Cadwell, born 1605 in northern Scotland.
The name, date, and place are all suspect. My notes for Walter:
There are hundreds of pedigrees on the internet that say this man was born in "north Scotland" about 1604/1605, but I haven't seen a source of this information.
This was posted on a message board for the Cadwell surname in 2002:
"Does anyone know the SOURCE for Walter CADWELL b. 1604, Scotlant?" [sic]
Not a single reply in eleven years.
Better researched is his alleged son, Thomas Cadwell, born 12 Jan 1636/37 in Hartford, CT and died 9 Oct 1694 in Hartford. He married Elizabeth Stebbins 1658 in Hartford. They had nine children.
Sources for Thomas: (note: those dates did not come from these sources)
Royal R. Hinman, Connecticut Puritan Settlers, (Hartford: Press of Case, Tiffany and Company, 1852).

from William Richard Cutter, Genealogical and Family History of the State of Connecticut, (New York, NY: Lewis Publishing Company, 1911); P. 582:
"Thomas Cadwell, immigrant, came from England and settled in Hartford; married, in 1658, Elizabeth, born in England, daughter of Edward Stebbins, who came from England with wife Mary, sister Eliza Holyoke from Tamilworth, Warwickshire, to Lynn, Massachusetts"

4604 Margaret - d. Aug. 23, 1670, Killingworth (now Clinton), Middlesex Co., CT. Her gravestone in the Congregational Church Cemetery is engraved 'M. G. 1670'. Surname not known. Genevieve Tylee Kiepura writes in "Griswold Ancestry in England" (The American Genealogist 39:176-180) that "Edward GRISWOLD m. Margaret BLENCOW of Marston St. Lawrence, co. Northampton, dau of John BLENCOW and his wife Mary WALLISON." However, in "Note on the Ancestry of the Griswolds of Connecticut" (The American Genealogist 40:43-44), John G. Hunt conclusively shows that the Edward GRISWOLD who married Margaret BLENCOW is not the immigrant to CT, and Genevieve Tylee Kiepura concurs. The Griswold Family Association identifies the husband of Margaret BLENCOW as Edward GRESWOLD (1594-1633) son of Thomas GRESWOLD and Elizabeth SHUCKBURGH - this Edward being father of the American immigrant Michael GRISWOLD of Wethersfield, CT.

Margaret Winslow married Robert Hicks <p82.htm>, son of James Hicks <p128.htm> and Phebe Allyne <p128.htm>, by 1603; Plymouth TGMB says little basis for Winslow surname, no records for Elizabeth Morgan marr.Trans says second wife...m. btw 1620-1630 assumed from ages..1,2,3 Margaret Winslow was born at England.3 Margaret Winslow was also known as Margaret (?). She was born in 1589 at Kempsey, Droitwich, Worcester, England.4 She was the daughter of Edward Winslow <p128.htm> and Eleanor Pelham <p129.htm>.5,4 Margaret Winslow was in these bibliography texts; TAG 54:31-4 says no proof WINSLOW; "Winslow Genealogy v1 has pedigree chart.6,3 She died before 6 March 1665 at Plymouth Colony; Probate of will.1 She left a will on 8 July 1665.7 She died after 8 July 1665 at Plymouth Colony; Date of Will.1 Her estate was probated on 6 March 1666 at Plymouth, Plymouth Colony.7 She died in 1666 at Plymouth, Plymouth Colony.2

4629 Mary Ann Elizabeth Hider was born 1855 in Withyham, Sussex, England as the daughter of a single mother, Charlotte Hider. After her mother married in 1859 Mary Ann Elizabeth took the surname of her step-father, George Willard (He was born and married as surname Willey, but later used the surname Williard).

On 10 Feb 1857, Peter Hider, son Peter, dau. Elizabeth, dau. Charlotte, granddau. Mary Ann Elizabeth (also: John William Barnett) all departed from London, on the ship Christiana. The ship landed at NYC on 8 Apr 1857. On 10 Apr 1857 the family arrived at Woodstock, Ontario, Canada.

I note that numerous online trees show Mary Ann Elizabeth's father as James Hider. This appears to be a mistake. James Hider and Barbara Tester had a child Mary Ann in the same year, 1855. But this child is a different person and apparently is the source of the confusion.

4630 Mary Ann Pratt b. 1797 is probably the Mary Pratt, dau of Richard Pratt and Hannah Mitchell, who was christened 1/28/1798 at St. Denys Church in Rotherfield, Sussex.

4644 Matthias Kisselman was born abt 1732. He married Maria Elisabeth Huber. By 1764 they had emigrated from Kieselbronn, Baden-Württemberg to Denmark (Schleswig-Holstein) and settled in the colony of Friedrichfeld. They immigrated to Russia in 1763, and arrived in the colony Balzer on 28 August 1765.

- Lang, Gerhard. German Colonists of Denmark on the Volga.

From http://www.russia-colonists.eu/wandere.htm by Gerhard Lang
MIGRATION OF COLONISTS FROM GERMANY IN 1761 TO SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN AND LATER TO THE VOLGA IN 1763.
In 1761, the Danish king (Duke of Schleswig-Holstein) recruited people from souther Germany to settle in Schleswig-Holstein, to drain the bogs and swamps and make the land productive. Many Germans answered the appeal. Later the worsening economic situation and resentment by local domestic workmen caused some colonists to break their contract with the king and desert. As the number of desertions increased, provision was made for colonists to apply for permission to leave.
At the same time, czarina Katharina the Great issued the manifesto that encouraged people to come to Russia. Among the inducements was provision for advance payment of colonist costs for the journey. There was a resident recruiter of colonists in Kiel.
The colonist records in Schleswig show that many colonists left, some requesting permission to do so while others simply deserted without a trace. Transport lists of those leaving from Travemünde and Lübeck are not to be found.
The Kuhlberg lists do provide listings of colonists arriving in Russia. The Volga village census records are another source. By comparing family names and ther names and ages of family members, I come to the conclusion that there is a high probability that many of the families that left Schleswig-Holstein became colonists on the Volga.
