6406 JUNIATA

This town is bounded on the north by Fair Grove, having Denmark on the west, Vassar to the south and Indian Fields east. Cass River flows through the southeast corner of the town, about three sections lying to the south and east of the river. The most of the town is rolling; about one-third perhaps, in the southeast corner, along the river, being level and having a more sandy soil than the other two-thirds, which is generally a clay loam.
This was among the earliest settled towns in the county. The first settlers in the town were Levi Rogers and family, who came in early in 1850. The first blow struck for improvement was by Andrew Jackson Rogers on land which his father had purchased of Townsend North. From Levi Rogers the town took the name of Rogers under which it was organized.
Shortly after came two German families, and about the same time William Jameson, Jonas Belknap, Ezra A. Belknap, John Freeman, S. H. Moore, Daniel Gorton Truman, and within the next two years Patrick McGlone, Ephraim Smith, Frank Fairhan, Daniel Kinyon, King Allen, Hiram Gibbs, Lucius Marvin, James Wing, Henry S. Russell, William Law, Andrew Schultz, Nelson Vickery, William Fenner, Daniel T. Tonkrey, E. Miller, R. G. Black.
Until 1852 the only roads were the lumberman’s supply and logging roads, very serviceable in winter but almost impassable in spring and summer. In 1852 a road was laid out from the present site of Watrousville which was cut through in 1853, the people generally turning out and helping to open the road. The commissioners to lay out this road were Jackson Rogers and William Jameson. Martin Miller, of Tuscola, was surveryor.

6423 Katharina Margaretha Maser1853 dau of Johan Peter Maser and Katharina Schaefer is likely the same person as Katharina Margaretha Maser1851 who married Johann Georg Eurich. Both were in Kukkus, there were no other of the same name in that time range and it also explains our DNA matches to other Maser descendants. Maser, Katharina Margaretha (I19285)

6424 Katharina Sophia Engelmann b. 1855 daughter of Johann christoph Englemann and Katharina Sophia Engelmann b. 1855 spouse of Peter Johannes born 26 Mar 1853 are very likely the same person. Engelmann, Katharina Sophia (I19289)

6425 Katharine's death certificate (per Sandra Wunsh) lists parents as John Dittenbir and Barbara Johns (probably Barbara Johannes)

Heinrich Andreas Reitz, Katharina Dittenbir and children appear on the Kukkus Reitz Surname Chart prepared by Dr, Igor Pleve. It would be assumed that the children were all born in Kukkus, however American records leave no doubt that all the children were born in the USA. Also Katherine Dittenbir lists her immigration to the USA in 1898. It would seem that the parents communicated with the church in Kukkus after immigrating and their childrens births were then entered into the Kukkus church records, where they were found many years later by Dr. Pleve.

6427 Katherine Elisabeth Becker was born April 5, 1867 in Kukkus, Russia. She married Philip Heinrich and twelve years later came to St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1908 they moved to Au Gres. She was an active member of the St. John's Congregational Church and of the Ladies' Aid Society. Katherine and Philip celebrated their 50th anniversary in November 1937. About a year later she went to Wheeler, MI to visit her son, William and his family. While there she became seriously ill and passed away December 12, 1938 at the age of 71. Funeral services were held from St. John's Congregational Church in Au Gres with Rev. G.K. Widmayer officiating. Burial was in Whitney-Sims Cemetery at Pt. Lookout. At the time of her death in 1938, she had a brother Adam Becker in Adrian, MI and two sisters in Russia. Becker, Katharina Margaretha (I25738)

Breunig, Kilian (I2867)

6444 Known as Albert Shultz or C. Albert Shultz he was a Civil War veteran with the 2nd Michigan Infantry, spent about 10 months as a Prisoner of War in Petersburg, Virginia and died shortly after being discharged from the service and returning home. This information is based on the following evidence:
Going to the website <http://www.suvcwdb.org/home/search.php?action=search> , (which is the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War which is the successor organization to the GAR Civil War veterans organization) and searching for Albert Shultz; I come up with an Albert Shultz, born 1840, Company F, 2nd Michigan Infantry, enlisted or reenlisted on 31 Dec 1863, promoted to Corporeal on 25 May 1864, Prisoner of War 30 Jul 1864 in Petersburg, Virginia, returned 18 May 1865 and discharged 28 July 1865. There is also an abbreviation DisFD which has to do with a disability discharge.

An on-line listing of the Watrousville Cemetery at <http://www.interment.net/data/us/mi/tuscola/watrous/index.htm>
shows:
Schultz, C A, Co A F 2nd MI Inf
Schultz, Hannah, d. 10 Dec 1865, 50y 1m 5d
Schultz, J K, d. 21 Aug 1853, 41y 11m 21d

From the probate files we know that the child known as Albert Shultz (also known as C. Albert Shultz or Charles Albert Shultz) died before 1866. As he was alive in the 1860 census, that gives us a 6 year window for his date of death.
His enlistment records shows that in Dec 1863 he was 20 years 10 months old, (although census records showed him to be 4-5 years older) a resident of Watrousville and born in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. He signed his name Albert Shults.

An online listing of Michigan Civil War Rosters (<http://www.michiganinthewar.org/infantry/2compf.htm>) lists Albert Shultz age 21 of Genesee County, Michigan in Company F, 2nd Michigan Infantry.

The ancestry.com civil war database lists Albert Shultz of Genesee County enlisted in Company F, 2nd Michigan Infantry on 24 May 1861 at Fort Wayne, Michigan. He was 21. He received a disability discharge on 28 Jul 1865.

His war Department record reads:

“Captured at Petersburg, Va July 30, 1864, paroled at James River, Va Feb 22, 1865, reported at Camp Parole, Md., date not given, sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, Feb 26, 1865, reported there March 4, 1865 and sent to Columbus, Ohio, April 25, 1865. He rejoined Co. May 25, 1865. Was admitted to Carver General Hospital Washington D.C. June 22, 1865, from regimental hospital with Chronic Pneumonia and was transferred July 11, 1865. Entered Stanton General Hospital Washington D.C. July 17, 1865 with congestion of the lungs, was discharged from service at this hospital July 28, 1865, on Surgeons Certificate of disability.”

Army of the United States Certificate of Disability for Discharge states that Albert Shultz was incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of: “Phthisis Pulmonalis acquired since enlistment by exposure while a prisoner at Danville, Virginia from July 1864 to February 1865-Disability total. Signed July 28, 1865 at Stanton General Hospital Washington, D.C.

On 28 May 1866 his name is mentioned in the “estate of C.A. Shultz” in Tuscola County Probate records, so he died sometime before that.

This brings up some questions. Did he stay hospitalized after discharge or was he simply sent home? Did he die at home? I would think that likely he died of Chronic Pneumonia brought on by the conditions at the POW camp. So although he did not die as a prisoner of war, he most likely died as a result of being a prisoner of war.

Bell does not appear to be a common name in the Volga Colonies. A check of the Kuhlberg Lists shows 1 Bell, Konrad Bell, a single man, from Stolberg, a servant of Ludwig Hoff, doc #1656.

A check of the index of first settler lists does not show any Bell's. However a Bell does show up on the 1775 census revision for Schilling (Schilling does not have a 1st Settler List). the 1775 Census Revision for Schilling states Konrad Bell, bachelor, born 1750, "farms with the aid of relatives"
It would appear that Konrad Bell was perhaps the only Bell to immigrate to the Volga Colonies, or at least one of very few.

The 1775 revision list for Schilling furthur notes that Konrad Bell, along with 2 other bachelors "Assigned to the colonies as laborers. According to testimony of the community they came alone to Russia and did not receive loans for farming. They were living in Lesnoy Karamysh (Grimm) with Grimm. They were in the colony of Gololobovka (Doenhof) and kinder (?) in that colony. They are currently engaged in farming, and with time will marry. Upon entering the economy they hope to be able to pay their debts. They are currently unable to assume the responsibility."

The 1798 census from Brent Mai's book listing all of the census records from 1798 shows only two Bell families, Konrad Bell in Kukkus and another Bell in Dinkel. The goal of this line of reasoning is to show that if we find any Bell's in Kukkus they are almost certainly without a doubt descendants of Konrad Bell.

In the 1834 census we do not find Konrad Bell, but we do find 3 Bell children all born between 1803 and 1810. Johannes, Konrad and Johann Philipp. They are living in the household of Philipp Neidhardt in 1816 (per the 1834 census-see household #102-P28) as step-children from his deceased wife. Based on our reasoning above we can conclude the following:

" These 3 children are sons of Konrad Bell.
" Konrad Bell died between 1810 and 1816. (1811 census shows he died in Kukkus in 1810)
" His widow Margareta Geisner remarried Philipp Neidhardt after 1810 and then herself died at some unknown date. (Phillip Neudhardt moved to Kukkus in 1811 to live in the Bell Houshold per the 1811 census)

Continuing with the same reasoning, we can conclude that any Bells whom we find on the 1857 census are the 3 sons of Konrad and their descendants. On the 1857 census we find the following Bell's and the household #:

" #18 Christina age 23 (spouse of Christian Reitz)
" #33 Maria Margaretha age 30 (spouse of Konrad Baum)
" #47 Konrad age 51 (one of the sons) along with 9 children and grand children
" #49 Johannes age 54 (one of the sons) along with 6 children and grand children
" #70 Phillip age 48 (one of the sons) along with 8 children and grand children
" #98 Anna Elisabeth age 26 (spouse of Johannes Heizenrader)
" #103 Katharina Margaretha age 26 (spouse of Andreas Maser)

Of the 4 females listed Christina born in 1834 does not appear on the 1834 census. Katharina Margaretha appears as the daughter of Johannes born 1830. Katharina Margaretha appears also as the daughter of Johannes born 1830. Maria Margaretha appears also as the daughter of Johannes born 1827.

I cannot find Konrad Bell on a transport list or a first settler list.

Kuhlberg list #1657 Conrad Bell. Lutheran from Stohberg. Single. Servant of Ludwig Hoff.
Ludwig Hoff, Lutheran, farmer from Stolberg. Single.
