Text: HERMAN SNEAR
Herman Snear was born in Germany 3 July 1836 and came to this country in 1857, settling in Erie, PA. In 1861 he was married to Miss Coney NITZEL who was also a native of Germany. Their married life extended over a period of 39 years, the wife dying in Oct 1900. In1867 they moved to Michigan, settling in Tuscola Co, where theyresided until 1883 when they came to Wise, Isabella Co, where the ylived until the death summons came. To them were born ten children, six boys and four girls. Three of the boys, Charlie, Joseph and John, diedbefore the parents. There still survive three sons, George, William and Frank, who reside in Wise. All the daughters are still living: Mrs. Wm.LEOSH and Mrs. James HERSEY of Wise, Mrs. Len WOOD or Gilmore, and Mrs. Wm. JOHNSON of Farwell.
Mr. SNEAR was a member of the GAR, having volunteered for his adopted country in 1861 and followed the flag for three years.
Since the death of his wife, he had resided with his son George. On Sunday last he seemed in his usual health and had spent part of the dayvisiting at another son's. When he returned home he lay down uponthe bed and was there found dead, the end coming evidently without a struggle.
The funeral was held at the ME Church in Loomis, services being conducted by Rev. PARSONS of Coleman, and interment in cemetery atLoomis. The very large attendance at the funeral attested the worth of the deceased and the high esteem in which he was held.Date: 23 Nov 2002

Torrey's New England Marriages lists the marriage of Thomas Wise by 1691 to (? Elizabeth Damerill). His source citation is the GDMNH which also questions the accuracy of this entry, as Elizabeth the widow of John Damerill was born in 1650 and would not likely be having children as late as1705. Therefore, I am listing her surname as unknown. | Unknown, Elizabeth (I24162)

Transcribed from the 1886 Kukkus Family List as born in 1888. However his mother was listed as a widow on 1/1/1886. He was drafted in 1889. (19 to 22 seems to be typical draft ages.) His first child was born 1898. I have entered 1870 as birth year. Even if incorrect, it is much closer than the transcription. | Rosenthal, Johann Georg (I21702)

Transcription of will of Johannes Degroot 18 Nov 1788:
No. 15
In the name of God, Amen. I Johannes DeGroot of the County of Richmond and State of New York, house carpenter, having attained to a good old age, insomuch, that according to the usual course of Nature it is reasonable to conclude that my departure from this transitory state of existence is not far distant, and conceiving it to be a prudent and wise part, to order and adjust my worldly concerns, before the strings of life are broken, and while blessed with the full and unimpaired enjoyment and exercise of my mental faculties, I therefore, in compliance with the calls of reason, and in obedience to the dictates of conscience, upon the fullest deliberation, make my last will and testament, in manner and form following. Principally it is my earnest desire to resign my spirit into the hands of the God who created me, in a reliance on his Mercies, and the meritorious sufferings of my exalted Saviour Jesus Christ, that it, being released from its earthly tabernacle may be wafted into the glorious presence and fruition of my Heavenly Father. The interment of my body I submit to the prudent management of my grandson, Garret DeGroot; requesting that no superfluous expences attend it; but that my Funeral be conducted in a decent and respectable manner, and the modern customs and rites of the Place be observed. My estate, real and personal, I give, bequeath, and dispose of in the following manner. Imprimis, I give and bequeath unto my son, Peter DeGroot, his heirs and assigns, all my carpenter's tools and wearing apparel, of what nature and kind soever, of which I shall die possessed, to the only proper use, benefit, and behoof of my said son Peter, his heirs and assignes for ever. Item! It is my will, and do hereby order and direct, that my said son Peter DeGroot, and his family shall occupy, possess and enjoy, for a limited time, the dwelling house which I built, on the declivity of the Bank, opposite to the Barn, in which he at present resides, together with the garden spot in front of it, without the set, hindrance or molestation of any of the heirs to my estate, that is to say, until William and Garret DeGroot, the sons of my grandson Garret DeGroot, shall both have attained to the age of twenty one years, or, in case of either dying, then only during the (undecipherable) of the survivor, and that during the term above mentioned (undecipherable) the said Peter DeGroot shall be obligated to keep the said dwelling house in good tenantable repair, and at the expiration of the said term to surrender the possession of the said house and privileges accompanying it, into the hands of the heirs thereof. Item. I give and devise unto William DeGroot, and Garret DeGroot, sons of my grandson Garret DeGroot, when they both shall have attained to the age of twenty one years, the above mentioned dwelling house, situate on the declivity of the bank, with its appurtenances together with the garden spot in front thereof, as it is now enclosed, to be to the only proper use, benefit and behoof of them, the said William and Garret DeGroot, their and each of their heirs and assigns forever, but in case either of my said great grand children above mentioned, should die under age, and without lawful issue, the share of the defunct to belong to the survivor and should it so happen that neither should live to the years of maturity, the property above devised to them, shall be at the full and free disposal of their father, garret DeGroot. Item! All the residue of my lands, tenements, improvements, hereditaments and appurtenances, whatsoever and wheresoever, comprehending therein all my lands situate in the Manor of Castleton amounting to about twenty two acres, a lot of salt meadow lying on the western shore of Staten Island computed to be twelve acres, and the farm or plantation which I now occupy, situate on the North side of Staten Island and fronting the river Kill Van Kull, I give, grant and devise to my said grandson Garret DeGroot, to him, his heirs and assigns forever. Item! I also give and bequeath to my said grandson, my Negro Man Thomas, and his Wife Sarah, my sorrel mare, all my farming utensils and household and kitchen furniture, of what nature or kind soever, and the whole residue and remainder of my personal estate, after the former bequests shall have been fulfilled. Item! I do will, order and direct that my said grandson Garret DeGroot, in consideration of the foregoing bequests, to pay or cause to be paid, unto my descendants underneath named, the full sum of four hundred pounds current money of New York, within the time, and in the manner hereafter directed. Previous to the payment of any part of the above monies to the legatees by my said grandson, Garret DeGroot, a bond given by me to Wilhelmus Vreeland, for the faithful payment of fifty pounds, shall be discharged and deducted from the said sum of four hundred pounds. Item! I do further will, order and direct that my said grandson, Garret DeGroot shall, in the first place, payments to my grandson, John Cruser, and grand daughter Lana Mersereau, the sum of fifty pounds each, current money of New York, which in case of either's decease shall be equally divided among their children. Item! The monies which shall then be left, after the payment of the above legacies and the discharge of the said bond, I do will, order and direct, my said grandson Garret DeGroot to pay to and divide equally among the other children of my sons Peter DeGroot and Robert DeGroot, or the survivors of them, share and share alike, and that my said grandson Garret DeGroot shall be allowed a term of five full years, after my decease, to pay the whole, or any of the legacies above bequeathed. Finally, I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my loving grandson, Garret DeGroot and John Cruser, to be the executors of this, my last will and testament, charging them to see the same, faithfully performed, according to my true intent and meaning; ratifying, allowing and confirming this to be my last will and testament. In Witness Whereof, I the said testator, haveherunto set my hand and seal this eighteenth day of November, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty eight, and in the thirteenth year of the Independence of the USA. Johannes X DeGroot. Signed, sealed, published and declared by the said Johannes DeGroot, as his last will and testament, in presence of us. Nathaniel Johnson, Elizabeth Bush, Abr(aham) Bancker. Richmond County (undecipherable) Be it remembered, that on the sixth day of May, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and ninety, personally came and appeared before me Adrian Bancker, Surrogate of the said County, Elizabeth Bush, Spinster, and Abraham Bancker, Esq., two of the sitnesses of the preceding will of Johannis (sic) DeGroot, who being duly sworn, on their oaths declared, that they did see Johannis (sic) DeGroot sign and seal the preceding instrument, purporting to be the will of the said Johannis DeGroot, bearing date the eighteenth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty eight, and heard him publish an declare the same as his last will and testament; that at the same time thereof, he, the said Johannis DeGroot, was of sound, disposing mind and memory to the best of the knowledge and belief of them, the deponents, and that Nathaniel Johnson, together with the deponents, subscribed the said will as witnesses thereto, in the testator's presence.

Two books contain much information about the Heyden line and early Windsor, Connecticut families in general. They are the 1888 book “Records of the Connecticut Line of the Hayden Family” by Jabez Haskell Hayden and the 1891 book “The History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor Connecticut 1635-1891” by Henry Stiles.
BIRTH:
12 Oct 1772 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut to “John and Anne Heydon”, per the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records. Both books list Anna Haydon being born Nov 1772 to John Haydon and Anna Trumbull. It should be noted that both books were published well before the Barbour collection of Connecticut Vital Records was published. The authors did not have this source available to them, thus they did not have an exact date of birth.
MARRIAGE:
By 1798 to Israel Osborn. Both books list Anna’s marriage to “Israel Osborn of E Windsor” without giving a date. We estimate 1797 as the marriage year based upon the birth of their first child in 1798, although there is an unreferenced IGI entry which lists 1793 as the marriage date. (IGI records with only a year are usually unreliable, as the lack of a specific date indicates that the information probably did not come from a church, governmental or other marriage document).
CENSUS RECORDS:
1800 Federal. Israel Osbourn appears in East Windsor on page 4 of 13 in East Windsor.
The ages and number of household members and who they possibly are:
Males 26-44: 1 Israel 27
Males 16-25: 1 ??
Males less than 10: 2 Israel Hayden 2 and Charles a few months
Females 16-25: 1 Anna Hayden 28
1810 Federal. Unable to find Israel in East Windsor.
For comparison to 1800 the 1810 East Windsor Census has 12 pages and 5 Osborn households, while the 1810 Windsor census has 35 pages and 10 Osborn households.
1820 Federal: We find Israel Osborn in Brighton, Ontario County, New York. (Monroe County is not formed until 1821 from parts of Ontario and Genesee County).
The ages and number of household members and who they possibly are:
Males 10-15: 1 Nathaniel 15
Males 16-18: 1 Wm E 18
Males 16-25: 3 Israel Hayden 22 , Charles 20 and Wm E 18 (Wm E is in 2 categories, this seems to be the way the census is constructed. The category numbers total to 11, but the people in the household total to 10)
Males 45+:1 Israel 47
Females 0-10: 2 Laura 8, Ursula 10
Females 10-15: 1 Mary 17
Females 26-44: 2 Anna 48 and Samantha Hayden 38
1830 Federal Census. Unable to find Israel Osborn.
1840 Federal Census. We find Israel Osbron in Henrietta, Monroe, New York
The ages and number of household members and who they possibly are:
Males 30-39: 2 Israel Hayden 42 and Charles 40
Males 60-69: 1 Israel 67
Females 20-29: 1 Laura 28
Females 30-39: 1 Samantha Hayden 58 ??
(Anna died 1843)
DEATH:
1843 in Henrietta, Monroe, New York per the inscription on her gravestone.
BURIAL:
Tinker Cemetery in Henrietta, Monroe, New York along with her husband and her children Charles, Israel and Laura. Inscription reads “Anna Hayden wife of Israel Osborn 1772 - 1843”.

To:
My line is from Jacob (Jr.) Van Arnam (1773) who between 1804-1810 with his
brothers Richard and John claimed free land in the vicinity of Kingston, ON,
as sons of Jacob (Sr.) Van Arnam, Brunswick, NY, a Loyalist Ensign during
the Revolution. Although their name was Van Arnam it was often transcribed
as Van Ornam/Orman/Norman. About half of Jacob (Jr.)'s kids eventually
migrated to Illinois, perhaps as a result of the Panic of 1837; one
definitely in connection with Dunscomb's Rebellion. This line is traceable
back to 1664, New Amsterdam, however at least one and perhaps three early
collateral lines are still missing.
There is a second family named Van Norman (Joseph and Benjamin) out of
Pennsylvania by way of Western New York who settled around Brantsford, ON,
to smelt iron ore around 1825. They may descend from a guy named Joseph Van
Norman who lived in the Minisinck area of New York, Pennsylvania and New
Jersey about 1750 but it dead ends there. Many believe he was the son of
Samuel Van Amen/Naamen who married Sara Delmontainie. Maybe he was but all
of this descent looks to trace to a book on the Montaigne family published
over 100 years ago which doesn't seem to cite any authority for it.There
are enough specific early birth dates associated with this family that I
suspect there is or was at one time a family Bible somewhere. However, I've never
seen it or even reference to it.
The question is whether these are two distinct families or one long-separated?
The answer is there's not enough information yet.
