Earned an Associate's degree in agriculture from Michigan State University
Tom was involved in an accident in 1983 that left him a quadriplegic, but he went on to farm for 22 years. He designed a lift for his tractor, enabling him to drive it - the first of its kind.
He also designed a pickle sorter that he sold to the Bessinger Pickle Company.
A Board member of the Arenac County Soil Conservation District for many years, and of the AuGres-Sims School Board from 1984-1996. President of the AuGres Athletic Booster Club for 22 years.
