      BIOGRAPHY FROM GENEALOGICS:
Pippin was born about 815, the only son of Bernhard I, king of Italy, and Kunigund of Laon. He was the first comte de Vermandois, as well as comte de Senlis, Péronne et Saint Quentin.

Pippin first appears in 834 as a count to the north of the Seine and then appears as the same again in 840. In that year he supported Lothar I against his father Emperor Louis 'the Pious'.

Pippin's wife is unknown, but his heir Heribert inherited much Nibelungid territory and so historian K. F. Werner hypothesised a marriage to a daughter of Theodoric Nibelung. Of his four children only Heribert would have progeny. Pippin's year of death is not known with certainty. As Heribert's year of birth is given as about 850, this suggests that Pippin must have lived to about then.

      Biography from wikitree:

Pepin first appears in 834 as a count to the north of the Seine during the reign of his granduncle Louis the Pious, Son and successor to his Great Grandfather Charlemagne aged 17 and then appears as same again in 840 aged 23.In that year, he supported his 45 year old uncle Lothair I against his aged great uncle, the 62 year old Louis the Pious.

      Name
      Pepin I[1]
      Pepin, Count of Vermandois. [2]
      Pépin (French) [3]
      Pippinum (Latin) [1]
      Pippin [3]
      815 Birth and Parentage
Pepin was born between, say, 815-818 [3][4] The place of Pepin's birth is unknown. [3]

Pepin was the son of Bernard I, the Carolingian King of Italy, and Bernard's wife Kunigund or Cunegundis [1]

Pepin's father died on 17 April 818 in Aachen, [4] following his unsuccessful revolt against Emperor Louis, as punishment for which he was blinded, dying of the wounds three days later. Baldwin notes that given his father's early death, Pépin must have been born quite near the end of his father's life. [3]

834 Appearance as Count Near Paris
In 834, Pepin appears among the supporters of the emperor (Louis I) as "Pippinus, consanguineus imperatoris." [3] Pepin flourished from 834 to 840 as a count, near Paris, [3]seigneur of Peronne and Saint-Quentin. [4][1]

      835 Mother Founds Monastery
In 835, the date of her charter, Pepin's mother, Cunegonde, founded the monastery of Santo Alessandro of Parma [4]

      835 Pepin's Marriage
Based on supposed dates of his children's births in the time frame 836 to 854, 835 has some merit as an estimated year of his marriage. However, with the exception of one estimate by Cawley for the birth of son Pepin say 850, dates and places of the children's births are essentially unknown.

The name of his wife, however, is unknown. [4] [3][1] Possibilities for his wife include the following women who are suggested in some sources, but no strong evidence supports either one.

Rothaide, possibly born in Vermandois 820, supposed daughter of Wala Bobbio and Rotlinde de Gellone. Said to have died 15 June 858 in Milan. The place name associated with Rothaide -- Bobbio -- is in Northern Italy and no reason has been suggested why Pepin would seek a bride that far from home. Wikipedia asserts that the claim of Rothaide de Bobbio to be Pepin's wife is 'spurious'. [5] Her location plus the assertions of spuriousness make her a less likely candidate for Pepin's wife.Day-1904 07:53, 18 May 2017 (EDT)
Unknown du Vexin, born, say 825. The place name associated with this unnamed woman -- Vexin -- is adjacent to Normandy in northern France. Cawley states that Settipani suggests that she was an unnamed daughter of Theodoric, son of Nibelung, Comte du Vexin, bearing in mind that Pépin's descendants inherited estates in the Vexin. [1] Pepin's heir inherited much Nibelungid territory and so historian Karl Ferdinand Werner hypothesized a marriage to a daughter of Theodoric Nibelung. [5] Baldwin adds that the conjecture that she was a member of the "Nibelungen" family (descendants of Childrebrand, son of Charles Martel) is based on the fact that Heribert I's predecessors in some of his possessions belonged to that family, and on the presence of the name Heribert in that family [see Werner (1960), 101-6].[3]
      Count of Vermandois
Pepin was the first count of Vermandois, lord of Senlis, Péronne, and Saint Quentin. [2]

840 Support for Lothair against Louis
Pepin appears again in 840, aged 23. In 840 he supported his 45 year old uncle Lothair I against his aged great uncle, the 62 year old Louis the Pious.[2]

      850 Death
Pepin I died after 840 (Baldwin and Richardson) [3][4] or 850 (Cawley) [1] His place of death is unknown.

      Issue
Comte Pépin and his unnamed wife had five children[1] including three sons, [4] whom Regino names, in order, "Bernardum, Pippinum et Heribertum" as the three children of "Pippinum" [6]

Cunegundis [1], or Cunigunde was born in Bayeux 836 [7] Cunegundis was cited in a list of relations of comte Odo, son-in-law of Héribert I Comte de Vermandois, without any indication of how she may have been related to the family. [1]
Bernhard I was born in Vermandois. [7] Bernard lived from about 845 to before 893 [1] as count of Laon [4][8]. According to some Italian authors, Bernard went to Italy and was the ancestor of the Bernardhengi. Because the names Pepin and Heribert are not found among the alleged descendants, Settipani is sceptical about this. Instead, Settipani suggests that comte Bernard may be the same Bernard who is recorded as one of the executors of Charles II "le Chauve" King of the West Franks in 877 and in that capacity donated property to Sainte-Marie de Laon. [1] Only in Regino's work does Bernard make a certain appearance in the records. Werner (1967, 455) and Settipani (1993, 215) assert that his identification with a count near Laon in the time frame 877 to 878 is not certain.[3]
Pepin II or Pippin lived from about 846 to 892 and was count of Senlis and lord of Valois. [8][4] He died after 28 January 893. [1] He was at the court of Emperor Charles “le Chauve” in 877, and thereafter was Comte to the north of Paris. [1][4][3]
Héribert I, Count of Vermandois, lived from about 850 to 907. [8][9] He was Count of Soissons in addition to Vermandois. [4] He was killed between 900 and 6 Nov 907. [1] In addition, he held the position of abbot of Saint-Crépin.[3]
An unnamed daughter is said without sources to have been born in Vermandois about 854, but since her father died in 850, her estimated birth has been advanced to 849. Cawley[1] reports an unnamed daughter who married firstly Berenger, Comte de Bayeux, who died after 13 December 892. Cawley explains that one way of reconciling the apparently contradictory sources which recount the origin of Poppa, wife of Rollo of Normandy, is that this daughter of Pepin might be her mother, married firstly to Berengar Comte de Bayeux and secondly to Wido (Guy) Comte de Senlis. Cawley states that there is no proof that this is correct. [1] Baldwin also reports a conjectured daughter who married Gui, count of Senlis, supposed parents of Poppa, wife of Rollo of Normandy. [3]
Douglas Richardson [4] provides one line of descent from Charlemagne to William the Conqueror and four lines of descent from Charlemagne to William's wife Maud.

      Parent: Bernard, 797-818
      This profile: Pepin, 815-850
      Child: Heribert, 850-906
Pepin's wife is unknown, she has been spuriously called "Rothaide de Bobbio". His heir inherited much Nibelungid territory and so historian K. F. Werner hypothesized a marriage to a daughter of Theodoric Nibelung.
