      1. FERRY1 RUTANT was born Abt. 1500 in St. Mihiel, Lorraine, France.

Notes for FERRY RUTANT: "The first record is of Ferry Rutan when he was mayor of St. Mihiel in 1534. The mob violence (of the religious war) struck first at St. Mihiel and the Rutan family fled to Metz where they established themselves in their various pursuits of good citizenship. It is to be noted that the records show this ancestry to be of noble birth, as a descendant of Ferry Rutan was exempt from tax in 1659 because of his "rank of the privileged."

There is no doubt but Blaise Rutan and Claude Rutant were children of Ferry Rutan or at least decendents. It is to be noted that each of these brothers, Blaise and Claude, had a son named Daniel, and Claude had a son Abraham, b. 1624.

"When the mob violence hit the city of Metz, the Rutan family, or at least some of them escaped with a party of friends, to Manheim, Lower Palatinate, Germany. Even there they were not safe as they were harassed by the French, so they moved on from Germany to Holland and then to America. (This is an error; the fact was that the former ruler of Manheim had died. He had given refuge to hundreds of the harassed Reformists. His successor was a strict Catholic and forced his subjects to follow his faith).

      Child of FERRY RUTANT is:

      2. i. FLORENTINE (BLAISE)2 RUTANT/RUTTAN, b. 1545, Metz, Nievre, Bourgogne, France; d. 1560.
