Story taken from the Monday, September 17, 1934 edition of The Ludington Daily News, Ludington, Mason County, MI, USA: Held for Slaying over Dollar Bill. STANDISH, Sept. 17. -(AP)- Walter Plebam, 40, was held in Arenac county jail today in connection with the death of Andrew Krum, 45, who died after an alleged fight over a dollar bill Sunday night. A hearing for the prisoner was set for today. Plebam told Sheriff John Johannes that Krum, a widower and father of three children, had accused him of stealing a doller from his (Krum's) pocket when the two men met in Twining Sunday night. The sheriff said Plebam told him he became angry, picked up a stick at the roadside near the Twining race track and hit Krum on the head.

Story taken from the Tuesday, September 18, 1934 edition of The Detroit Free Press, Detroit, Wayne County, MI, USA: One Is Killed in Fight Over a Dollar Bill - STANDISH, Sept. 17. -(A. P.)- Walter Plebam, 40 years old, was held in the Arenac County Jail Monday in connection with the death of Andrew Krum, 45, who died after a fight over a dollar bill Sunday night. Plebam told Sheriff John Johannes that Krum, a widower and father of three children, had accused him of stealing a doller from his (Krum's) pocket when the two men met in Twining Sunday night. He then left the village and started for his farm home in Twining Township, Plebam related, but Krum followed and continued his accusation. The sheriff said the Plebam told him that he then became angry, picked up a stick at the roadside near the Twining race track and hit Krum on the head. Charles Hollister, Arenac County farmer, had followed the pair and reached the scene a few minutes after Krum had been felled, his neck broken. Hollister carried Krum's body back to Twining and summoned Deputy Sheriff John Streeter. Plebam returned to the village with Hollister.

    Notes:

    Information from Jack JDS:
This woman is Maria Christina Goringer/Garinger, the illegitimate daughter
of above. As her mother brought her to Kukkus when she (the mother)
married Krumm/Krum, she became the stepdaughter of Krumm/Krum. In fact,
she is listed as the stepdaughter in two records showing their immigration
through Quebec City, QC, Canada. In one she is listed a handful of lines
above the Krumm/Krum family, and in the other she is written in as the last
entry with the family. In both she's a stepdaughter. I think this clan
came in to Quebec City and traveled through Winnipeg on their way to
    Lincoln, NE.

In the 1910 Census the Krumm/Krum family is listed in Michigan with 6 kids,
the eldest being Margaretha Catharina from Krumm/Krum's prior
marriage. The son Andreas/Andrew from the same prior marriage was still in
Nebraska, where the family had originally settled. I believe he was
working as a laborer on a farm a few counties away from Lincoln and
enumerated as "Andy Krumb." He subsequently followed to Michigan as I will
note in a moment. The next eldest "Krum" daughter was, in fact, the
stepdaughter Maria Christina Goringer/Garinger, the illegitimate daughter
of the wife Maria Christina (Goringer) Krumm/Krum. The remaining 4 kids
were from both of these parents, and they are actually the only ones
included in the "count" of 4 born, 4 living. It should read 5 born, 5
living, but apparently either the enumerator or the wife did not understand
that this field meant kids by just the mother, not by both parents. The
record also indicates that these folks had been married 10 years, he on his
second marriage, she on her first. In his case I'm not so sure that he was
only married once before, but in hers this was, in fact, her first marriage.

On 23 Feb 1913 Andreas/Andrew, son of Krumm/Krum by the prior marriage,
married Maria Christina Goringer/Garinger, the illegitimate daughter of
Maria Christina (Goringer) Krumm/Krum. I wonder how they met? Ha! In the
record the bride's name is spelled Garinger, which is the variant used by
most, if not all, of my Goringer cousins that settled in Michigan. The
bride's father's name is "Peter." It may well actually have been some
Peter, but I doubt it. The mother's name was "Mary." The bride was living
with her mother, Maria Christina aka "Mary" and her stepfather, so I would
think her mother was "kind enough" to supply her with the "legitimate"
father's name. Actually, I think what her mother provided was her own (the
mother's) father's name, Peter, and it wouldn't surprise me if she never
let on to the girl that she was illegitimate, and that the girl's obituary
may well also be incorrect on this point. Either way, the fact that the
mother provided this name Peter seems to have led most, if not all,
"genealogists" astray. Ha! They could search for the mysterious Peter
Goringer until the end of time, and they'd never find him because he
    doesn't exist.

    Notes:

    Information from JDS:
This woman is Maria Christina Goringer, born 21 May 1877 in Lauwe. Her
father's name was Peter Goringer. Her mother's name was Catharina
Dittenbier (?) - not certain of the spelling. In the Pleve chart for
Goringer she appears with an illegitimate daughter, Maria Christina
Goringer, born 16 Dec 1896. In a transcription of 1886 Lauwe family lists
she appears as 8 years old (as of 1 Jan 1886, so born 1877), married with
no indication of when and no Lauwe household number (suggesting she'd moved
to another colony to marry), and the same illegimate daughter, though the
daughter's birthdate is 11 Nov 1886 in this. I'd go with Pleve's date
absent better information. He's not always correct, but he's better than
most other transcribers. Per her obituary she married Andreas/Andrew
Krumm/Krum on 6 Feb 1900, presumably in Kukkus. It would seem her parents
(both still living past 1900) probably helped her with her kid for a few
years until she found a man to marry. Naturally, she brought her
illegitimate daughter to Kukkus with her. Her first child of eight by
Krumm/Krum was Peter, born 21 Aug 1900 in Kukkus. I'm going to assume this
kid was Krumm/Krum's and that she did not arrive already a month or two
pregnant by some other guy. The fact that this kid is named Peter suggests
he was named for her father. The rest of the kids were born in the
US. Krumm/Krum was married (at least) once before, and by the immediately
prior wife he had two living kids, both of which were on the boat. One,
Margaretha Catharina, married Heinrich/Henry Heinrich. The other,
Andreas/Andrew, is more interesting as you will see.

    Name:
It is believed that this surname is a translation/transcription error (Russian G and H are the same character) or some other type of error. The evidence is very strong that she is a Goeringer.
