MITCHELL - Helen M. Schneider, 89, of Mitchell, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Oct. 6, at 10 a.m., at the Federated Church in Mitchell with Dr. Charles H. Richardson officiating. Interment will be at the Mitchell City Cemetery. Friends who wish may call at the Jones Mortuary, Sunday, from 1 to 5 p.m., and at the funeral. Memorials have been established to the church or to the American Heart Association. Jones Mortuary in Mitchell is in charge of arrangements.
Helen was born Oct. 12, 1918, at Mitchell to Peter and Katherine (Reitz) Johannes. She grew up and received her formal education in Mitchell, graduating in 1937. On March 15, 1942, Helen married Ben Schneider. From 1942 to 1944, she worked at the Scotts Bluff County Court House and from 1944 to 1947, she was employed by the Burlington Northern Railroad. She worked part-time for the railroad until 1963, and was then employed by Blair's Drug of Mitchell.
Helen was active in the Federated Church, enjoyed playing pinochle, traveling and working crossword puzzles. In addition, Helen and her husband were avid supporters of the Mitchell High School athletic programs, ardent followers of college football and loved "Big Red" football. Helen will be remembered as being forthright, honest, hard working, and most importantly as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her husband, Ben of 66 years; daughter, Nancy (Mike) Kearns; granddaughter, Keelie Kearns (Duane Dike); grandson, Chad (Kaci) Kearns; great-granddaughter, Karlie Johnson; step-great grandsons, Colby and Creighton Dike, all of Mitchell; son, Russ (Cathy) Schneider of Vienna, Va.; granddaughter, Nancy (Todd) LaSala; great-grandsons, Anthony and Samuel of Overland Park, Kan.; granddaughter, Jennifer (Jim) Hannesschlager of Arlington, Va.; and grandson, Todd (Jennifer) Schneider of San Diego, Calif.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Katherine and Elizabeth; and brothers, Peter III, Henry, William and John.

We do not have definitve proof that the Anna Margaretha Weigandt born 1823 in Kukkus to Johannes Weigandt is the same person as the Anna Margaretha Weigandt born 1823 who married Johannes Reitz.However, circumstantially it makes sense. We have the same name, the same birth year, the same village and the continuity of that name and age through the 3 Kukkus censuses of 1834, 1850 and 1857.

Records from this time and place are simply incomplete. But based on what we know, it is most likely that Anna Margaretha Weigandt is the daughter of Johannes Weigandt. Perhaps eventually we will find records to confirm or to dispute that, but for now I am listing Anna Margaretha in the genealogy under Johannes Weigandt.

We strongly suspect that The Anna Margaretha Heinrich born 1822 and showing on the Kukkus 1834 census as the daughter of Wilhelm Anton Heinrich is the same person as the Anna Margaretha Heinrich born 1822 and showing on the Kukkus 1850 census as spouse of Johann Heinrich Krumm and also the same person as the Anna Margaretha Heinrich born 1822 and showing on the 1857 Kukkus census as the wife of Konrad Maser based on the following facts:

1) Joahnn Heinrich Krumm died 1849 and his widow Anna Margaretha is living in 1850 in household 87 with two Krumm children, Johannes and Christina.Konrad Maser, a widower, is living in HH 90. All of this per the 1850 Kukkus census.

2) In 1857 the Krumm children, Johannes and Christina are living in what was household 87 (called HH 100 in 1857) alone, aged 14 and 12. Anna Margaretha is living three Households away in HH 103 with Konrad Maser. In 1850, Konrad Maser lived in HH 90 as a widower. In 1857 HH 90 is relabeled as HH 103. In 1850 the widow and widower are living 3 households apart. In 1857 the children are still in the same Krumm household, but Anna has moved in with the widower in the Maser household.

3) The continuity of the same name, same birth year and same village on 3 consecutive censuses in Kukkus, 1834, 1850 and 1857 strongly suggests that all 3 entries refer to the same person.

Records from this time and place are simply incomplete. But based on what we know, it is most likely that Anna Margaretha is the daughter of Wilhelm Anton. Perhaps eventually we will find records to confirm or to dispute that, but for now I am listing Anna Margaretha in the genealogy under Wilhelm Anton Heinrich.
