Johann Michael Johann was born on 28 February 1739 in Ober-Schönmattenweg (east of Weinheim), today in Baden-Württemberg. He immigrated to Denmark (Schleswig-Holstein) and settled in the colony of Veltenhof. He married on 26 May 1760 in the colony of Fredericia (Denmark) to Eva Margaretha Sattler. She was born in about 1736 in Affolterbach.
They immigrated to Russia in 1763, and arrived in the colony of Anton on 7 September 1764. They and their children are recorded on the 1767census of Anton where Michael is serving as the Vorsteher (mayor) in Household No. 1.

MIGRATION OF COLONISTS FROM GERMANY IN 1761 TO SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN AND LATER TO THE VOLGA IN 1763.
In 1761, the Danish king (Duke of Schleswig-Holstein) recruited people from souther Germany to settle in Schleswig-Holstein, to drain the bogs and swamps and make the land productive. Many Germans answered the appeal. Later the worsening economic situation and resentment by local domestic workmen caused some colonists to break their contract with the king and desert. As the number of desertions increased, provision was made for colonists to apply for permission to leave.
At the same time, czarina Katharina the Great issued the manifesto that encouraged people to come to Russia. Among the inducements was provision for advance payment of colonist costs for the journey. There was a resident recruiter of colonists in Kiel.
The colonist records in Schleswig show that many colonists left, some requesting permission to do so while others simply deserted without a trace. Transport lists of those leaving from Travemünde and Lübeck are not to be found.
The Kuhlberg lists do provide listings of colonists arriving in Russia. The Volga village census records are another source. By comparing family names and their names and ages of family members, I come to the conclusion that there is a high probability that many of the families that left Schleswig-Holstein became colonists on the Volga.

2839 From Diane Heil:
Katharina Margretha Becker was born 16 Sept. 1856 in Kukkus. She was the daughter of Unknown Becker & Unknown Felsing. She married George Jesson of Kukkus before 1879 in Kukkus. He died of illness, but there was a son George Jesson born to the couple on 19 Feb. 1879 in Kukkus. This George moved with his widowed mother to Lauwe.

The 1798 Kukkus Census shows on page 5, #14 ......
Widow Margareta Becker, age 54, with children of deceased husband David Becker.
Son: 1. Wilhelm Becker, age 21, married to Wilhelmina Fuss, age 21, from Shilling
2. Johann David, age 16
3. Andreas, age 13
4. Johann Jakob, age 10

Daughters: 1. Margareta, age 8
2. Katharina, age 5

The widow Katarina Margaretha Becker-Jessen married (2nd) Johann Gottlieb Markus of Lauwe, location and date unknown. They had 4 children all born in Lauwe.
1. Conrad Markus was born 6 Aug. 1884
2. Marie/Mary Christine was born 9 July 1886
3. Katharina/Katharine was born 16 Sept. 1888
4. Katrina Margaretha who was born 19 Mar. 1892.
An unfortunate accident caused Johann Markus' death in Lauwe as he tried to stop a team of run-away horses leaving Katharina Margareta Becker-Jessen-Markus a widow once again. Johann's brother Peter Markus, who was a widower himself with 3 sons of his own, decided to take his own family as well as his brother's family to America. Katharina and Peter immigrated separately, each with some of the children from the combined families. Peter brought the older 3 children with him and they all found jobs to earn the passage for Katharina and the remaining younger children, who immigrated two years later. I believe Peter immigrated about 1900.

Families recall 2 who died
Megan McCloskey | Posted Apr 26, 2005

The widow of an Army veteran from Colorado who was killed in a helicopter crash in Iraq said her husband would have wanted to die serving his country.

“He would go out of his way to help other people, no matter what the expense was,” Jessica Obert said.

Jason Obert, 29, of Fountain, Colo., was in Iraq working as a bodyguard for Moyock- based Blackwater Security Consulting, which the U.S. government hired to provide security in the most dangerous places in the world.

Obert, two North Carolina residents and three other American security contractors were among the 11 civilians killed when the helicopter was shot down Thursday. Obert and his Blackwater colleagues were on their way to Saddam Hussein’s hometown for a diplomatic security detail.

Blackwater said its dead included Obert; David Patterson, 27, of Havelock; Robert Jason Gore, 23, of Nevada, Iowa; Luke Adam Petrik, 24, of Conneaut, Ohio; Steve McGovern, 24, of Lexington, Ky.; Eric Smith, 31, of Waukesha, Wis.

A seventh Blackwater guard, Curtis Hundley, 42, of Kernersville was killed near Ramadi by a roadside bomb on Thursday.

U.S. and Iraqi forces have arrested 10 suspects in the helicopter downing, the military said Sunday. Iraqi civilians helped U.S. forces locate the first six suspects, who were captured early Saturday, the military said.

Jessica Obert spoke with her husband just two hours before the crash.

“Both of us just had a really bad feeling about it,” she said. “I asked him not to go, but he wasn’t the type of person to ever quit -- at anything.”

He ended the conversation saying he would call her as soon as he could. Two hours later, insurgent missile fire took the helicopter down 12 miles north of Baghdad. All 11 aboard were killed.

“It’s been hell,” Jessica Obert said about telling her two young sons that their dad is never coming home. “They’re so resilient, but they have a lot of questions and a lot of anger.”

Jason Obert left behind 8-year-old Cameron and 6-year- old Tyler.

Obert left the U.S. Army shortly before Sept. 11, 2001, leaving him longing to serve his country in Iraq like his close military friends were doing, his widow said.

“It was something that he felt very strongly that he needed to do,” she said.

Jason Obert had only been in Iraq for three weeks when he was killed.

“He felt it was his duty to go and do his part,” Jessica Obert said. “He was so proud. Everything he did was about serving in the community. He was trying to protect and serve.”

Gore was a soldier first and foremost, his grandfather Bill Shelby told The Tribune, in Ames, Iowa.

“That is what he was, and he just loved it,” said Selby, of Nevada. “He was just a wonderful kid.”

Gore enlisted in the Iowa National Guard in 2000 and was mobilized for the war in Iraq in February 2003. He returned to Iowa in May 2004, Hapgood said.

Smith’s family issued a statement over the weekend remembering him as a patriot “who made the world a safer place through his service to his country.”

Smith went to Iraq in February to work for Blackwater.

“It was Eric’s deep sense of patriotism and his abiding Christian faith that led him to work in Iraq,” Smith’s family said in the statement released through Blackwater. “He wanted to go where good people needed help. He will be dearly missed.”

“We can’t help but feel that the world is a less safe place without him.”

SHERIDAN, Wyo. - Jason Edward Obert, 29, of Fountain, Colo., died Thursday, April 21, 2005, when the helicopter he was riding in was shot down in Iraq.

Jason was a loving father, an exceptional husband and a wonderful son. He showed such enthusiasm for everything he did in life and shared that with everyone he knew. His dedication to family, friends and country was unsurpassed. His love for people and his desire to help and serve his country were evident in the choices he made.

Jason married Jessica Bruzee, Jan. 15, 2000, in Sheridan. Upon discharge from the Army, he went to work for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office in Colorado Springs. He was a Sheriff's Deputy nearly four years before signing on with Blackwater Security and going to Iraq.

Jason loved baseball, motorcycles, four-wheelers, camping with family and friends, scuba diving, taking your money in Texas Hold-um, and most of all, the Denver Broncos. Jessica and the boys shared these passions with that same enthusiasm.

Jason is survived by his wife, Jessica; and sons Cameron and Tyler, of Fountain; his mother, Lanna and Russell Goodman; brother Matt and sister Kristina; his father, Jerry and Jessie Obert; brothers Shane Wilson and Rusty Clark, all of Sheridan; his grandparents, Colleen and Noel Weichman of Wagner, S.D., and Edgar Langston of Harlowton; and his godparents, Linda and Frank Kreil of Wagner. Burial will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, with military rites by the U.S. Army, the American Legion Post #7 and the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
