Schoonover, Harry Melvin (I15853)

3107 JDS Notes-
His middle initial C likely comes from his father's name Constantin. His birthplace is erroneously Colorado in California death records. He sailed with his parents and siblings on the SS Haverford from Liverpool on 9 Oct 1912 and arrived at Philadelphia, PA, USA on 21/22 Oct 1912. Last residence and birthplaces were Shcherbakovka.
Ehrlich, Alexander (I12701)

3108 JDS Notes-
His mother's name is Catherine on his death certificate. He erroneously gave his birthplace as Lincoln, NE on his WWII draft card. Could birth date be 27 Sep 1892 to reconcile with the Johannes who died earlier in 1892??

3113 JDS Notes-
Obituary taken from the Tuesday, August 4, 1914 edition of The Lincoln Star, Lincoln, Lancaster County, NE, USA: Andrew Hergenrader, age 59 years, died at 11:30 o'clock this morning at the family residence, 910 Y street. Deceased has been a resident of Lincoln for some time. He is survived by a wife and twelve children. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday at St. John's German Evangelical church at Tenth and New Hampshire streets. Rev. David Maul will conduct the services. Burial will be in Wyuka cemetery.

He sailed on the SS Pennsylvania from Hamburg on 12 Oct 1901 and arrived at NY, USA on 25 Oct 1901. His contact in the USA was his "brother" Georg in Lincoln, NE. As Andreas had no brother Georg, this contact is believed to have been Georg-George Hergenröder-Hergenrader (born 20 Sep 1876), who was actually a first cousin, once removed. (Andreas and Georg and their families appear to have traveled together from state to state between 1900 and 1910 based on the birthplaces of their children during those years.) Last residence was Saratov, and birthplace was Russia.

Hergenroeder, Andreas (I12676)

3114 JDS Notes-
She was indicated as the mother of 11, 6 living, in the 1910 California Census. She and her husband were indicated as on their second marriages, married 4 years, though it would appear that this was at least her husband's third marriage. She is buried as Lizzie Scharton.
Baum, Katharina Elisabeth (I249)

3115 JDS Notes-
She was indicated as the mother of 2, 2 living, in the 1910 California Census, although she in fact had one known child that had died. She and her husband were indicated as on their first marriage, married 7 years.

Reitz, Maria Elisabeth (I516)

3116 JDS Notes-
She was indicated as the mother of 9, 9 living in the 1910 Nebraska Census. She was indicated as on her first [sic, actually her second] marriage, her husband on his second marriage, married 12 or 19 years.

She and 11 children sailed on the SS Furnessia from Glasgow on 8 Mar 1902 and arrived at NY, USA on 19/20 Mar 1902. Her contact in the USA was her husband Andreas at 942 J. Street in Lincoln, NE. Last residence was Kukkus, and birthplaces were Russia.

3117 JDS notes-Biography taken from page 2548 of "History of Fresno County California With Biographical Sketches of the Leading Men and Women of the County Who have been Identified with its Growth and Development from the Early Days to the Present," by Paul E. Vandor, Historic Record Company, Los Angeles, California, 1919: HENRY SCHNEIDER. - An enterprising viticulturist and horticulturist. Henry Schneider is well posted in that branch of agriculture, as his productive vineyard and orchards give testimony. He was born in Guges, Samara, Russia, August 21, 1888, and his father, George Schneider, was a farmer in that country and brought the family to Fresno in 1901. Here he engaged in ranching at Rolinda, where he bought a forty-acre ranch and cultivated the land until his retirement to Fresno in later life, where he now lives. The mother, Annie Felzing before her marriage, died in Fresno about 1913, and six children had been born to this worthy couple. The youngest child in the family, Henry Schneider was brought up on the home farm and received his education in the public schools of that country. After the family came to Fresno, in 1901, he assisted his father to care for the family and helped get a start by working out in vineyards. He then helped his father improve their own ranch until he reached twenty-one years, when he started out in life for himself, purchasing a twenty-acre ranch at Rolinda and improving it to vineyard, peaches and alfalfa. In the meantime, with his brother George he purchased forty acres of raw land in the Barstow district, and leveling it, set it out to Thompson grapes. Later they sold this property and Mr. Schneider devoted his entire time to his Rolinda ranch, which he operated until 1914, when he sold out and purchased his present twenty-acre ranch; this he also improved from the raw land and now has fifteen acres in Thompsons and the balance in apricot orchard. The marriage of Mr. Schneider, in Fresno, July 2, 1908, united him with Miss Lena Pretzer, born in Perrin Colony, and daughter of Jack Pretzer, a brother of Henry Pretzer, who were early settlers of Fresno County, coming here in the eighties. Her father was a rancher and vineyardist here but now is engaged in ranching at Chowchilla. Mrs. Schneider was educated in the public schools of Fresno County. They have three children: Lydia; John; and Harry. The family attends the Lutheran Church. Mr. Schneider is a member of the California Associated Raisin Company, and a man of progressive ideas and good judgment. Schneider, Henry (I5752)

3118 JDS Notes-Descendants believe that he died while serving in the Russian army. Markus, Heinrich (I12641)

3119 jds notes-He and his wife and two of her children by her first marriage sailed on the SS Mount Carroll from Hamburg on 21 Jul 1923 and arrived at NY, USA on 2 Aug 1923. His contact in Europe was his friend Roman Nickel at the "homecoming," i.e., refugee, camp in Frankfurt an der Oder, Germany, and his contact in the USA was his uncle Philip Rietz at Box 407 in Fresno, CA. Last residence was Frankfurt [an der Oder]. His birthplace and that of the children was given as Kukkus, and his wife's was Bangert, though it is almost certain that the children were actually born in Lauwe.

His obituary notes that he was the father of six, five living, although actually two of the living were his wife's children by her first marriage.

Notes for VANCE BENJAMIN SCHRADER:
His middle name is spelled Bengaman in a transcription of Social Security applications. His birth year is given as 1920 on the same, but he does not appear in the 1920 Census enumerated 17 Jan 1920. He was born in 1921.

3123 JDS notes-The daughter Barbara is almost certainly not from the wife born in 1808. She may be from the same mother as the girl born in 1814, which I assume absent better information, or she may be from some wife in between. Klaus, Barbara (I3732)

3124 JDS notes-The names of the girls born in 1833 and 1835 appear to be flip-flopped in the 1850 Census transcription. I don't know whether they are that way in the original, but I do know that they are certainly reversed. In the 1834 Census transcription the girl born in 1833 (1 1/2 years old as of 6 Oct 1834) is Maria Katharina.

JDS notes-Maria Catharina Klaus married Johann Georg Körber (Kerber in the USA) of Stahl am Tarlyk sometime before Jul 1853. She had six known kids by him, five of which came to the USA and ultimately wound up in Fresno. This old woman came to the USA with her son Adam and family in March 1898. I'm not sure where she was in 1900 or 1910, but there's no doubt that she died in Fresno County on 26 Mar 1914 and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery. Her grave marker gives 1832 as her birth year, but she was actually born 5 Mar 1833. AHSGR Fresno notes give her father as Adam Claus and her mother as Mary Katrena Klaus, so her mother's maiden name remains a mystery.
Klaus, Maria Katharina (I10886)

3125 JDS notes-This bio is for George born in 1883, but it talks about his parents, siblings, etc. He spelled his name Schneider as in Kukkus, but this bio and AHSGR Fresno death notes spell it Snyder. It is Schneider on his grave marker, so it seems that he may have been back to using Schneider at his death.

AHSGR Fresno notes give his father as "Adam Snyder" and his mother as "Mary Snyder." The father was actually Georg Adam Schneider born about 1825 in Kukkus, and the mother I think was Elisabeth Katharina Beltz born about 1827. "Mary Snyder" was likely a (bad) guess by some kid.

Biography taken from pages 2435-6 of "History of Fresno County California With Biographical Sketches of the Leading Men and Women of the County Who have been Identified with its Growth and Development from the Early Days to the Present," by Paul E. Vandor, Historic Record Company, Los Angeles, California, 1919: GEORGE SNYDER. - An energetic farmer who has succeeded as a horticulturist and viticulturist, and by so doing has advanced California agriculture and has added to the wealth of the state's improved resources, is George Snyder, who was born near Volks, Samara, Russia, on November 9, 1883, the son of George Schneider, who was a farmer there. One of his sons had come out to the United States and to Fresno County as early as 1900 and two years later the father brought his wife and the balance of the family to California and settled in Fresno. Here he engaged in farming and viticulture, and such was his reward that he is now able to live retired. Barbara Schneider, his wife, also lived for years in Fresno County, and here she died, the mother of four boys and two girls. Lizzie is Mrs. Busick of Fresno; Peter is a rancher near Barstow; Christine has become Mrs. Baude of Fresno; George is the subject of this review; and Conrad and Henry are ranchers not far away. George was brought up in his native place and educated there in the public schools; and when he was eighteen years of age he came, in May, 1902, to Fresno County. He soon went to work on a fruit ranch for one dollar and a quarter a day, but although he had to board himself, he saved and got ahead. For two seasons Mr. Snyder worked at haying for Robert Mclndoo, and when the latter sold out, he bought a team and outfit on time, and started teaming in Fresno. A year later he purchased a hay baler, and for nine seasons he teamed a part of the year and contracted to bale hay for the rest of the time. Then he leased an orchard and a vineyard of 120 acres at Parlier, where he went into partnership with Charles Scharer. He had previously raised grain on leased land with his brother Henry, thus acquiring some experience of value later, and then he had bought forty acres in Barstow, which he set out with Thompson seedless grapes and three years later sold at a profit. He and his partner now took charge of this peach orchard and vineyard of Thompson and Muscat grapes; but when the property was disposed of, they had to relinquish the lease. In 1916, he bought his present place of eighty acres in Barstow from Al Munger, and at once turned it to horticultural and viticultural purposes. He has twenty acres of apricots set between olive trees, and thirty acres of Elberta and Muir peaches, as well as Lovells; the peaches also being interset with olives. He also has a vineyard of thirty acres of Thompson grapes. His ranch is under an almost perfect system of irrigation; besides being under the Herndon Canal he also has a pumping plant. Mr. Snyder belongs to and actively supports the California Associated Raisin Company, the California Peach Growers, Inc., and the California Olive Growers' Association. On June 17, 1905, Mr. Snyder was married at Fresno to Miss Pauline Steitz, born in Fresno, a daughter of Daniel and Catherine (Seifert) Steitz, one of the first of eight families from his native land to locate in Fresno in 1887. Mr. Steitz became gardener for Einstein & Gundelfinger, also janitor of the Bank of Central California. He died in 1903 [sic, 1902]. A widow and four daughters survive him, of whom Mrs. Snyder is the oldest. She was educated in the Fresno schools. They have one daughter, Elsie. The family belong to the Free Cross Lutheran Church.

Schneider, Johann Georg (I5755)

3126 JDS notes-This was his second wife. Yes, some sort of cousins. They married 10 Feb 1915 in Fresno County, CA. She was born 11 Oct 1853 in Kukkus and died 17 Jan 1926 in Fresno County, CA.

I would think she was married to someone else prior to this.
Schneider, Maria Katharina (I12598)

3127 JDS notes:
A note in the transcription of the 1798 Volga Census indicates that he moved from Kukkus to Schilling in 1790 with his mother. He was enumerated in Schilling 1798, but a note indicates that he was working in Warenburg. He later appears to have returned to Kukkus.

3137 JDS Notes:
He, 27, his wife Katha, 23, and two children (Maria, 2, Katha, 2 months) sailed on the SS Astoria from Glasgow on 1 May 1902 and arrived at NY, USA on 12 May 1902. His contact in the USA was his cousin Johannes Korgon (?) in Lincoln, NE. Nationalities were Russian, and last residences were Kukkus. A note in the record suggests that the family was held, perhaps being ill, and an illegible note on the line for Maria may indicate something specific to her.

Krumm, Johann Georg (I1238)

3138 JDS Notes:
Her birthdate is 19 May in her transcribed confirmation record.
Confirmation: 08 Apr 1917, Christ Congregational Church, Fort Morgan, Morgan County, CO, USA

Tempel-Temple, Anna Maria (I15942)

3139 JDS Notes:
Her death certficate erroneously give her place of birth as Indiana.
Chapman, Viola Mae (I15902)

3140 JDS Notes:
His birthdate is 25 Sep on the Pleve chart for the surname Reitz and on his death certificate but 28 Sep in the transcription of the 1886 Kukkus Family List. 25 Sep is assumed to be correct.

He and his wife and three children sailed on the SS Rhein from Bremen on 2 Jun 1907 and arrived at Baltimore, MD, USA on 17 Jun 1907. His contact in the USA was his stepfather Heinrich Engelman in Blissfield, MI. Last residence and birthplaces were Kukkus, except that birthplace was Stahl am Tarlyk for his wife.

Reitz, Philipp (I532)

3141 JDS Notes:
His birthdate is 30 Oct on the Pleve chart for the surname Reitz but 31 Oct in USA records.

He and his wife and two sons sailed on the SS Rhein from Bremen on Feb 1908 and arrived at NY, USA on 21 Feb 1908. His contact in Russia was his brother-in-law Jacob Busick in Kukkus, and his contact in the USA was his stepfather Heinrich Engelman in Blissfield, MI. Last residence and birthplaces were Kukkus.

Reitz, Peter (I522)

3142 JDS Notes:
His death certifcate erroneously gives his parents' names as those of an elder brother and sister-in-law. His birthdate is 10 Dec on the Pleve chart for the surname Reitz but 5 Dec in USA records.

Marriage Notes for CHRISTIAN REITZ and VIOLA CHAPMAN:
The groom erroneously gave his father's first name as Henry, which was actually his stepfather's first name.

Reitz, Christian John (I371)

3143 JDS Notes:
His name is inscribed on a grave marker shared with his last wife at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Fresno, Fresno County, CA, USA, but no dates are provided.
Kaufmann-Kaufman, Johann Martin (I15870)

3144 JDS Notes:
His obituary mentions a brother Henry in Colorado and two unnamed sisters in Russia.

Mueller-Miller, Conrad (I15864)

3145 JDS Notes:
His surname is spelled Laurence in his marriage record and Lawrence in the 1910 Michigan Census.

Marriage Notes for CATHARINA-KATHERINE REITZ and EDWARD LORENZ:
The license related to this marriage contains numerous oddities. The groom's surname is spelled Laurence, the bride's is spelled Riete or Rietc, the bride's father's given name is Philip, which was actually the name of an elder brother, the bride's mother's maiden name is Layman, and the record indicates that the license itself had not been returned as of Mar 1909, fully 13 months later. Tthe couple is enumerated in the 1910 Michigan Census under the surname Lawrence and indicaed as married 2 years. It is assumed that marriage did take place on the basis of this license, as the later divorce record gives the date of marriage as 21 Feb 1908.

3146 JDS Notes:
It's clear from the 1834 Rev List that he'd been married at least twice.

In the absence of better information:

1) I would assume a first wife was the mother of his first three known kids, 1815, 1820, and 1822.
2) I would assumed his second wife was the mother of his kids born in 1827, 1829, and 1832.
3) The second wife was a Katharina Sophia Kriess, who I suspect came from the Griess (spelled as such) HH 216 in Norka in 1798, which appears to be the only place males with this surnamed existed in 1798. She was probably born after 1798 to one of the three eldest sons listed there.

The 1834 Rev List makes note that George Adam (Kriess) was the illegitimate son of Habermann's deceased wife Katharina Sophia, so we know she was unmarried in 1822 and could not be the mother of Habermann's eldest three kids.

Here's where things get complicated...

Lauwe marriage records show a Nov 1833 marriage (perhaps just the bann, with the marriage being a bit later) of Wilhelm Preuss (born about 1792) and a widow Margaretha Elisabeth Habermann born Schumann (born about 1801).

This widow I believe was the Margaretha Elisabeth Schumann born 19 Jul 1801 in Laub, married Andreas Heinrich Doos (9 Apr 1800 - 1825) of Dinkel, with whom she had five known kids, married Johann Friedrich Habermann of Kukkus sometime thereafter, and married Wilhelm Preuss of Lauwe in late 1833.

In looking across all non-Catholic colonies that have been transcribed, which includes pretty much any colony that this woman could have been widowed in, the only one with a male Habermann that died prior to 1834 that could possibly fit is Johann Friedrich Habermann in Kukkus, noted as dying in (about) 1833.

If I'm correct:

1) Habermann had some earlier wife (perhaps more than one) that was the mother of his first three known kids. This wife died as early as 1822, perhaps in childbirth.
2) Katharina Sophia (Griess-Kriess) could not have married Habermann any earlier than about 1823, as she had her illegitimate kid in 1822, probably in Norka, and Habermann also had a kid by his first wife in 1822. An unwed mother with and infant from another colony would be a good match for a recently-widowed guy with three kids, one being an infant, as both had infants needing support, and an unwed mother would often "leave town" to marry.
3) Margaretha Elisabeth (Schumann) was married to Habermann at the time of his death in (about) 1833, and could not have married him any earlier than very late 1825 as her Doos husband died in (about) 1825, and she had a child by him in Oct 1825. I would expect her to have remarried in about 1826, perhaps to Habermann, perhaps to someone else.
4) George Adam Kriess, being an illegitimate kid who clearly came to Kukkus with his mother, as he appears there in 1834 (and thereafter), was likely raised by Habermann nearly from infancy, and remained with Habermann after his mother's death.
5) The note about Kriess being the illegitimate son of Habermann's deceased wife Katharina Sophia is probably specific in naming her to make clear that she was not his last wife, and that George Adam was not of his last wife.

The only real questions that I think remain are:

1) When did Katharina Sophia die?
2) Who might Margaretha Elisabeth (Schumann) Doos have married in about 1826 if not Habermann?
3) When did Habermann marry Margaretha Elisabeth (Schumann) Doos … ?

That Habermann had no known kids between 1822 and 1827 suggests to me that Katharina Sophia was not the mother of those beginning in 1827. It's possible, of course, but seems like a large gap to have no surviving kids.
On the other hand, if Margaretha Elisabeth married Habermann in about 1826, she could easily have been the mother of those kids. This would mean that Katharina Sophia died in about 1825.
If Margaretha Elisabeth did not marry Habermann in about 1826, then she would have married someone else, been widowed, and then married Habermann later.

In any case, I think Margaretha Elisabeth had to be the wife of Habermann at the time of his death in (about) 1833.
