Notes for HEINRICH-HENRY KUKKUS-KUKUS:
His birth month varies by source between Jun and Jul.

He and his wife sailed on the RMS Lake Ontario from Liverpool on 1 Apr 1902 and arrived at Saint John, NB, Canada on 12 Apr 1902. His destination was Sioux City, and his contact was indicated to be his "uncle," presumably a man named Gottfried Schmidt. The record suggests that he was also traveling with his parents (listed just below in the record), but while the others in the party were undoubtedly related they do not appear to have actually been his parents.

3161 JDS-Notes for AMALIA/MOLLIE JOHANNES:
She is suspected of being an illegitimate daughter of Maria Sophia Schengel later adopted by Johann Jacob Johannes.

Obituary found on the Internet: Mollie Nuss, daughter of Jacob and Maria Sophia (Schengel) Johannes, was born March 22, 1898, in Kukkus, Russia. Her death occurred on March 22, 1984, in the AlaFern Nursing Home after several years of failing health. Her age was 86 years. Mollie came to the U.S. with her parents when she was four years old. She received her basic education in the schools near the family home, and on May 4, 1920, was married to Adam Nuss at Milberger, KS. This union was blessed with one son, Marvin. Mollie moved with her family from the farm to Russell in 1940 when Adam began his carpentry trade. Mollie continued her work as a housewife, homemaker and mother, and for a number of years worked in the diet kitchen at the Russell City Hospital. She was a member of St. John Lutheran, Russell. After the death of her husband, Adam, on Nov. 13, 1976, she continued to live alone for a time until her health failed and she could no longer take care of herself. She then became a resident at the AlaFern Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adam; son, Marvin who died on April 16, 1982; a half-brother, Sigmund Karst; and four step-sisters: Bertha Peil, Hannah Popp, Dolly Lang and Amelia Nuss. She is survived by: three stepsons: Caesar Nuss, Russell; Herbert Nuss, Great Bend; Elmer Nuss, Valdosta, GA; two half-brothers: Henry Alvin Karst, Hutchinson; Herman Karst, Olmitz; sister Katie Radke, Wichita; half-sister: Marie Kramer, Hoisington. Other survivors are her daughter-in-law, Donna Nuss, of Amarillo, TX; and 2 grandchildren, Dane Nuss of Amarillo and Mrs. Gary (Marsha) Cooper of Enid, OK. Funeral 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 26, 1984 from the church, Rev. Herman Frerichs officiating. Burial church cemetery. Pohlmans Mortuary, Russell.

3162 JDS-Notes for ANDREAS-ANDREW BELTZ:
He and his wife and son sailed on the SS Oldenburg from Bremen on 1 Mar 1907 and arrived at Baltimore, MD, USA on 14 Mar 1907. His contact in the USA was his brother Gottfried Beltz in Lincoln, NE. Last residence and birthplaces were Kukkus.

Beltz, Andreas (I13191)

3163 JDS-Notes for CATHARINA-ANNA BARBARA KRIESS:
Her name is Anna Barbara on the Pleve chart for the surnam Klemm but Catharina Barbara in the transcriptions of the 1850 and 1857 Kukkus Censuses.

Kries, Catharina-Anna Barbara (I2006)

3164 JDS-Notes for CHRISTIAN KLEMM:
He and his wife and two children sailed on the SS Hansa from Hamburg on 9 Nov 1922 and arrived at NY, USA on Nov 1922. His contact in Russia was his brother Georg Klemm in Kukkus, and his contact in the USA was his brother-in-law (sister's husband) Adam Klauss in Saginaw, MI. Last residence was Frankfurt [an der Oder], Germany, and birthplaces were Kukkus, Russia.

Klemm, Christian (I2004)

3165 JDS-Notes for JOHANN HEINRICH DEBUS:
He and his wife and two children sailed on the SS Etruria from Liverpool on 15 Nov 1902 and arrived in NY, USA on 23 Nov 1902. His contact in the USA was his cousin Conrad Johannes in Lincoln, NE. This family was traveling with the related family of Johann Philipp Johannes (born 08 Aug 1841).

The family may have returned to Russia before Sep 1905, as the Pleve chart for the surname Debus suggests that they had another child in Kukkus on 3 Sep 1905, and that Johann Heinrich Debus died there on 20 May 1907. The Pleve chart for the surname Klemm gives the same death information for Johann Heinrich Debus. However, it is also possible that the family did not return and that details were simply sent back to Kukkus to be recorded in the church records there. Pleve charts frequently contain such "sent back" details with no indication that they are such, thus leading people to wrongly think that events occurred in Russia when they actually occurred in the USA or elsewhere.

Debus, Johann Heinrich (I4227)

3166 JDS-Notes for KATIE JOHANNES:
Transcribed obituary found on the Internet taken from the October 4, 1999 edition of the Russell Record, Russell, Russell County, KS, USA: Katherine "Katie" Radke, 97, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999, at Trinity Lutheran Manor, Merriam. 3167 JDS-Notes for MARIA SOPHIA SCHENGEL:
She is indicated as the mother of 4, 4 living, in the 1910 Kansas Census. All of these children are in the household, with 2 being from her first husband Johann Jacob Johannes (or perhaps 1 illegitimate and 1 from him), and 2 from her second husband. She and her husband are each indicated as on their second marriage, married 6 years.

Obituary found on the Internet: MRS. MARIA S. BOXBERGER - Maria Sophia, daughter of Henry and Maria (Becker) Schangel [sic, Schengel], was born September 6, 1876 at Kukkus, Russia and departed this life on August 23, 1969 at The Hoisington KS Lutheran Hospital. The following year her husband died at Rocky Ford and sometime later she came to Galatia, KS and was married to Henry Karst, also a widower. Mr. Karst also passed away on December 2, 1933. There were two daughters by her first marriage and three sons by the second marriage. With her duties as a farm wife she was also the mother to five step daughters, along with her own children. On January 3, 1940, she was again united in marriage to Peter Boxberger at Russell and she made her home here in Russell. Mr. Boxberger also preceded her in death in October 1952. 3169 JDS-Notes for MARIA-MARY ELISABETH-ELIZABETH KUKKUS:
Obituary taken from the Thursday, February 6, 1964 edition of The Lincoln Evening Journal & Nebraska State Journal, Lincoln, Lancaster County, NE, USA: GERINGER - Mary L. Roper & Sons', 1319 N.

Her name is given as Anna M. in the 1920 Nebraska Census. The middle initial L is erroneous and likely comes from Lizzie, a nickname for Elisabeth. It is the same in cemetery records.

3170 JDS-Notes for PHILIPP BECKER:

3171 JDS-notes-

3172 JDS-Notes-
She was indicated as the mother of 7, 4 living, in the 1910 Colorado Census. She and her husband were indicated as on their first marriage, married 15 years.
Johannes, Catherine (I11464)

3173 Johann Bernhard Becker born 25 Feb 1714 in Berghausen, Braunfels, Hesse, Germany and died there on 5 Feb 1760. On 26 Jun 1767 his widow Anna Maria and six of their children arrived in Kukkus, Samara, Russia as part of the original colonist group. In 1767 3 of the male children had established their own household, Johann Adam, David and Balzar. Jacob and Wilhlem were living with their mother and new husband, Christian Herbel. Jacob and Wilhelm would eventually form their own family group, leaving a total of 5 Becker households in Kukkus.
On the 1798 census in HH50 we have 3 children without parents. Apparently their father had recently died. They were born 1780, 1782 and 1784. Their father would be one of the 5 male children of Bernhard and Anna Maria. According to the 1798 census Johann Wilhelm and Baltasar were still living in 1798, thus neither can be the father. Johann Adam died before 1770, thus he cannot be the father. That leaves David and Johann Jakob. Although David had died after 1793, his six younger children in 1798 were in HH14 with his widow. Those children were born 1777, 1782, 1785, 1788, 1790 and 1793. It does not make sense that 3 children born 1780, 1782 and 1784 would be living in another household in 1798 as orphans. Those children are in a different family group. That leaves Johann Jakob as the only possibility for the father of these 3 children.
On the 1811 Census it shows Heinrich Andreas Becker (who is one of the 3 children in 1798 HH50) living in HH19 with Andreas Rosenthal who is married to Katharina Margaretha Becker b. 1777. Thus suggesting that Katherina is also a member of Johann Jakob's family. The two other children were females. The 1811 census only shows males.

Becker, Johann Jakob (I2284)

3174 Johann Bernhard Becker born 25 Feb 1714 in Berghausen, Braunfels, Hesse, Germany and died there on 5 Feb 1760. On 26 Jun 1767 his widow Anna Maria and six of their children arrived in Kukkus, Samara, Russia as part of the original colonist group. In 1767 three of the male children had established their own household, Johann Adam, David and Balzar. Jacob and Wilhlem were living with their mother and new husband, Christian Herbel. Jacob and Wilhelm would eventually form their own family group, leaving a total of Five Becker households in Kukkus.
Baltasar, Jacob and Wilhelm were too young to have a child in 1769, David b. 1748 is old enough, however he had a different child in 1769. Johann Adam b. 1744 makes the most sense to be the father of Heinrich Konrad. Adam also has a son named Johann Adam.
Becker, Heinrich Konrad (I2220)

3175 Johann Georg Rothermel was born in Hammelbach (northwest of Weinheim) on 23 September 1713. He married on 13 February 1741 in Wald-Michelbach to Eva Margaretha Erhard. She had been born 14 October 1714 in Lichtenklingen. They have two sons who were born in Lichtenklingen: Georg Peter (born 4 February 1745) and Georg Leonhard (born 14 March 1749).
The Rothermel family immigrated first to Denmark (Schleswig-Holstein) and then on to Russia in 1763. They arrived in the colony of Anton on 7 September 1764. They are recorded there on the 1767 census in Households No. 6 (Georg), No. 16 (Peter), and No. 24 (Leonhard).

3177 Johann George Reitz appears in the Kukkus church records. Apparently he and his siblings were added there after the parents left Kukkus in 1898. This would explain why Dr. Pleve shows the entire family in Kukkus, as he build his chart, in part, from the church records!
In the American records, the name George J. Reitz seems to be consistantly used.

3179 Johann Kaspar Kreiter listed as stepson to Johannes Debus on 1834 census. Johannes was a widower with children in 1798. He had children from 1804 to 1812. Then he had children from 1818 to 1823. Then by 1834 he was married to Anna Katharina. Somewhere in there was a wife with a stepson born in 1815. Debus, Johannes (I2254)

3180 Johann Kaspar Kreiter listed as stepson to Johannes Debus on 1834 census. Johannes was a widower with children in 1798. He had children from 1804 to 1812. Then he had children from 1818 to 1823. Then by 1834 he was married to Anna Katharina. Somewhere in there was a wife with a stepson born in 1815. Kreiter, Johann Kaspar (I3791)

3181 Johann Michael Johann, son of Hans Michael & Eva Johann, was born on 28 February 1739 in Ober-Schönmattenweg (east of Weinheim), today in Baden-Württemberg. He was baptized on 4 March 1739 in Wald-Michelbach. He immigrated to Denmark (Schleswig-Holstein) and settled in the colony of Veltenhof. He married on 26 May 1760 in the colony of Fredericia (Denmark) to Eva Margaretha Sattler. She was born in about 1736 in Affolterbach.
They immigrated to Russia in 1763, and arrived in the colony of Anton on 7 September 1764. They and their children are recorded on the 1767 census of Anton where Michael is serving as the Vorsteher (mayor) in Household No. 1.

3184 Johannes Felsing was the deceased husband of the deceased first wife of Johann Peter Debus according to the note on the entry for his son Johann Georg (who was living in the household of Johann Peter Debus) in the 1798 census. Johann Peter Debus had a son with his second wife in 1791, which implies that his first wife died before 1791. His first wife only married Johann Peter after her first husband Johannes had died, therefore Johannes had to die before 1791, most likely a few years before. As his son was born 1784, his death date had to be between 1784 and 1791. Felsing, Johann Georg (I1408)

Burial will take place on Jeff and Joy's ranch followed by a reception at the Powder River Community Center in Arvada. Joy passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2013, surrounded by family in San Antonio, Texas while on vacation.

A Wyoming native, Joy was the youngest of six children born to Frank and Ollie Kane in Douglas, WY on December 10, 1950. She grew up and went to school in Gillette, WY until she married Claude Voiles in July of 1967. The couple moved to the Ranch at Arvada and she graduated from Arvada High School in 1968. Joy and Claude had two children, Tiffany Ann (1971) and Samuel Matt (1974). In 1978, Joy and Jeff Sorenson began their life together and were later married in October, 1998. The two spent their lives living and working the Middle Prong Land and Livestock Ranch while raising children, chasing grandchildren and donating time to the Arvada Community.

3189 JSA-Notes for PETER HENRY-HARRY BITTER:
He gave his middle name as Harry on his WWI draft card. His tombstone has the middle initial H. It is Henry in at least one other source.

He and his sister Maria sailed on the SS Republic from Liverpool on 9 Oct 1907 and arrived at Boston, MA, USA on 17 Oct 1907. Their contact in Europe was their mother Christine at 36 Brauerei Str. in Libau, and their contact in the USA was their brother Heinrich in Sugar City, CO.

3190 Katharina Barbara on 1850 census. Maria Barbara on 1834 and 1857 census. Eurich, Catharina-Maria Barbara (I3479)

3191 Katharina Sophia Engelmann b. 1855 daughter of Johann christoph Englemann and Katharina Sophia Engelmann b. 1855 spouse of Peter Johannes born 26 Mar 1853 are very likely the same person. Engelmann, Katharina Sophia (I1676)

3192 Katharine's death certificate (per Sandra Wunsh) lists parents as John Dittenbir and Barbara Johns (probably Barbara Johannes)

Heinrich Andreas Reitz, Katharina Dittenbir and children appear on the Kukkus Reitz Surname Chart prepared by Dr, Igor Pleve. It would be assumed that the children were all born in Kukkus, however American records leave no doubt that all the children were born in the USA. Also Katherine Dittenbir lists her immigration to the USA in 1898. It would seem that the parents communicated with the church in Kukkus after immigrating and their childrens births were then entered into the Kukkus church records, where they were found many years later by Dr. Pleve.

3193 Katherine Elisabeth Becker was born April 5, 1867 in Kukkus, Russia. She married Philip Heinrich and twelve years later came to St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1908 they moved to Au Gres. She was an active member of the St. John's Congregational Church and of the Ladies' Aid Society. Katherine and Philip celebrated their 50th anniversary in November 1937. About a year later she went to Wheeler, MI to visit her son, William and his family. While there she became seriously ill and passed away December 12, 1938 at the age of 71. Funeral services were held from St. John's Congregational Church in Au Gres with Rev. G.K. Widmayer officiating. Burial was in Whitney-Sims Cemetery at Pt. Lookout. At the time of her death in 1938, she had a brother Adam Becker in Adrian, MI and two sisters in Russia. Becker, Katharina Margaretha (I808)

Breunig, Kilian (I10972)

3196 Konrad Bell appears on the 1798 Kukkus Census in household #7 with his wife Margareta Heisner (Geisner?)(from Schilling). His birthdate is 1750. He has one daughter Maria Barbara from a prior deceased wife.

Bell does not appear to be a common name in the Volga Colonies. A check of the Kuhlberg Lists shows 1 Bell, Konrad Bell, a single man, from Stolberg, a servant of Ludwig Hoff, doc #1656.

A check of the index of first settler lists does not show any Bell's. However a Bell does show up on the 1775 census revision for Schilling (Schilling does not have a 1st Settler List). the 1775 Census Revision for Schilling states Konrad Bell, bachelor, born 1750, "farms with the aid of relatives"
It would appear that Konrad Bell was perhaps the only Bell to immigrate to the Volga Colonies, or at least one of very few.

The 1775 revision list for Schilling furthur notes that Konrad Bell, along with 2 other bachelors "Assigned to the colonies as laborers. According to testimony of the community they came alone to Russia and did not receive loans for farming. They were living in Lesnoy Karamysh (Grimm) with Grimm. They were in the colony of Gololobovka (Doenhof) and kinder (?) in that colony. They are currently engaged in farming, and with time will marry. Upon entering the economy they hope to be able to pay their debts. They are currently unable to assume the responsibility."

The 1798 census from Brent Mai's book listing all of the census records from 1798 shows only two Bell families, Konrad Bell in Kukkus and another Bell in Dinkel. The goal of this line of reasoning is to show that if we find any Bell's in Kukkus they are almost certainly without a doubt descendants of Konrad Bell.

In the 1834 census we do not find Konrad Bell, but we do find 3 Bell children all born between 1803 and 1810. Johannes, Konrad and Johann Philipp. They are living in the household of Philipp Neidhardt in 1816 (per the 1834 census-see household #102-P28) as step-children from his deceased wife. Based on our reasoning above we can conclude the following:

" These 3 children are sons of Konrad Bell.
" Konrad Bell died between 1810 and 1816. (1811 census shows he died in Kukkus in 1810)
" His widow Margareta Geisner remarried Philipp Neidhardt after 1810 and then herself died at some unknown date. (Phillip Neudhardt moved to Kukkus in 1811 to live in the Bell Houshold per the 1811 census)

Continuing with the same reasoning, we can conclude that any Bells whom we find on the 1857 census are the 3 sons of Konrad and their descendants. On the 1857 census we find the following Bell's and the household #:

" #18 Christina age 23 (spouse of Christian Reitz)
" #33 Maria Margaretha age 30 (spouse of Konrad Baum)
" #47 Konrad age 51 (one of the sons) along with 9 children and grand children
" #49 Johannes age 54 (one of the sons) along with 6 children and grand children
" #70 Phillip age 48 (one of the sons) along with 8 children and grand children
" #98 Anna Elisabeth age 26 (spouse of Johannes Heizenrader)
" #103 Katharina Margaretha age 26 (spouse of Andreas Maser)

Of the 4 females listed Christina born in 1834 does not appear on the 1834 census. Katharina Margaretha appears as the daughter of Johannes born 1830. Katharina Margaretha appears also as the daughter of Johannes born 1830. Maria Margaretha appears also as the daughter of Johannes born 1827.

I cannot find Konrad Bell on a transport list or a first settler list.

Kuhlberg list #1657 Conrad Bell. Lutheran from Stohberg. Single. Servant of Ludwig Hoff.
Ludwig Hoff, Lutheran, farmer from Stolberg. Single.
(cannot find Ludwig Hoff on a transport list or a first settler list.)
Bell, Konrad (I3824)

3197 Kries(or Kriess) appears to be the correct German spelling. However in the U.S. the family used Kreis. Kries(Kreis), Conrad (I11293)

3198 Kukkus Isheim, Johann Jakob (I3134)

3199 Kukkus birth records include the following:
#31, 32. Twins Cath. Magd. [Catharina Magdalena] and Maria Charl. [Charlotta] Beker [Becker], born 13, baptized 20 November 1799.
Parents: Conrad Beker and Catharina Haase from the village Volskoye.
Godparents and witnesses: Joh. Horch, Magd. Beker, Thom. Heizenroeder, M. Charl. Fuchs.

HH 43 in 1798 - these are the parents
HH 42 contains Maria Charlotta Fuchs, a sponsor
HH 30 contains Thomas Hei..., another sponsor, married to Anna Margaretha Becker
HH 31 has a Becker wife named Magdalena that I suspect is another sponsor

These sponsors might suggest that Maria Charlotta (Becker) Fuchs, Anna Margaretha (Becker) Hei..., and Wilhelm Becker were siblings of Johann Conrad Becker. We know from the 1811 Kukkus census HH43 that Konrad and Wilhelm were brothers. Most likely Anna Margaetha was the child of Dvid on the 1767 1st settler list. It is possible that child died and David had another female in 1770 named Anna Margaretha.

HH 24 in Stahl am Tarlyk has a Johannes Horch, but I don't see how he'd be connected. I suspect it must be some other Horch that perhaps had a Becker wife.

Becker, Anna Margareta (I2186)

3200 Kukkus surname chart by Dr. Pleve shows 17 Feb 1889 as birthdate. However as this came from church records, it may possibly be a baptism date. Heinrich, Heinrich (I923)
