I found out that my husband's grandfather, Heinrich was born in Kukkus from his death certificate 4 Oct 1930 and the funeral director. Then I found out a mystery that kept me wondering for a while. I know that he came with his wife and some of her sisters and bro-in-laws from Russia in 1900. Then on Jerry's grandfather's obit in 1930 it said that the body was being held pending the arrival of his mother (step-mother) and two step-brothers and two step-sisters from Fresno, CA. Hmmmm, I had to crack this mystery. I eventually found that his (my husband, Jerry's) great-grandfather had remarried and brought his 2nd wife and family from Kukkus in 1901. They made a brief stop in the Dolton/Lansing, Cook Co., IL. area where Heinrich and family resided and then moved on to Rocky Ford, Otero Co., Colorado to set up house. The great-grandfather's name was Peter Engelmann or Johann Peter who died in Colorado 10 Nov 1913. His death certificate gave me the name of his father, Johann Gottfried Engelmann and his mother's first name was unreadable, but the last letters were tall letters and her last name was Gerlach. From the 1834 Census of Kukkus the only Gerlach sister that would fit the first name would've been Katharina Margaretha Gerlach. That is not a proven, but a strong speculation on my part. I have found a Katharina Margaretha Gerlach married to someone else, but it could've been a second marriage.--Sharon Dickson-Engelman
