Notes |
- From Diane Heil:
Katharina Margretha Becker was born 16 Sept. 1856 in Kukkus. She was the daughter of Unknown Becker & Unknown Felsing. She married George Jesson of Kukkus before 1879 in Kukkus. He died of illness, but there was a son George Jesson born to the couple on 19 Feb. 1879 in Kukkus. This George moved with his widowed mother to Lauwe.
The 1798 Kukkus Census shows on page 5, #14 ......
Widow Margareta Becker, age 54, with children of deceased husband David Becker.
Son: 1. Wilhelm Becker, age 21, married to Wilhelmina Fuss, age 21, from Shilling
2. Johann David, age 16
3. Andreas, age 13
4. Johann Jakob, age 10
Daughters: 1. Margareta, age 8
2. Katharina, age 5
The widow Katarina Margaretha Becker-Jessen married (2nd) Johann Gottlieb Markus of Lauwe, location and date unknown. They had 4 children all born in Lauwe.
1. Conrad Markus was born 6 Aug. 1884
2. Marie/Mary Christine was born 9 July 1886
3. Katharina/Katharine was born 16 Sept. 1888
4. Katrina Margaretha who was born 19 Mar. 1892.
An unfortunate accident caused Johann Markus' death in Lauwe as he tried to stop a team of run-away horses leaving Katharina Margareta Becker-Jessen-Markus a widow once again. Johann's brother Peter Markus, who was a widower himself with 3 sons of his own, decided to take his own family as well as his brother's family to America. Katharina and Peter immigrated separately, each with some of the children from the combined families. Peter brought the older 3 children with him and they all found jobs to earn the passage for Katharina and the remaining younger children, who immigrated two years later. I believe Peter immigrated about 1900.
(According to JDS and Lauwe census lists, Johann Gottlieb and Peter Markus were first cousins, not brothers.)
